how do I change the speedometer cable in a primera?

The speedometer in my 1995 1.6 lx nissan primera is not working. At the gearbox about 2" of cable is sticking up once I remove the cable retaining nut. I presume this means the cable is broken. there is a white plastic connector about 8" above the gearbox connection can the cable be replaced as far as here or do I have to change the complete cable If so do I have to also remove the dash.
Thanks

If the cable is broke you will have to replace the whole cable. And you do have to remove the dash to connect the cable to the back of the speedometer. I would remove the dash first to check that the cable didn't come disconnected at the speedometer first, since you will have to remove it anyway. Some times they snap into a plastic clip to hold them in place, but other screw into the back of the speedometer. But it would be worht it to check first. Also were it bolts to the outside of the car they usualy have a gear on the end of the cable so I would check to see if it was broke there also. Hope this helps you
