Renault scenic 1.9dti 2001 engine won't start?

The alternator belt shreaded on the way home today, as it did the engine cut out and won't restart. The RAC man said that if it could effect the timing. The engine is turning over but won't run. Has any body got any ideas? How do you reset the timing.?

As the aux belt shreaded some of it may have been pulled into the timing belt, this causes the crank shaft pully to shear it's drive pin, this is a engine protection feature,.The timing belt and pulley will look fine and turn as normal, but as the pulley is not driving the crank shaft, and hence the valves the engine with not start. The solution is to buy a new pulley from renault and a timing belt and get it fitted

If the timing is not perfect on a diesel engine it will have caused damage to the valves & pistons,it will not start & is prob badly damaged, get it to a garage & expect the worst i am afraid.
