Hotpoint thermostat question?

My Hotpoint 9536 stops after filling, I believe it`s the thermostat as
the element and thermal overload are ok and if I press the Economy
button the cycle continues, without heating. I tested the stat with
a multimeter and it shows open circuit, is this normal?. There are three wires connected to it. I would appreciate any help.

Thanks for the quick answer, daz, when the stat is cold it`s all open
circuit, I heated it like you said, then it`s all closed circuit, ie. all three
terminals are connected so it looks like it`s kaput.

Try testing the thermostat with the meter (on resistance ohms) on the centre tag plus the outer ones in turn.

I think that you should get a short circuit on one tag , and open circuit the other way.

Then heat the themostat up (with a hair dryer or drop into scalding water) then retest, and the opposite should happen as the thermostat switches at the hotter temperature.

If it doesn`t then change it.
