having downloaded the homepage lock file i tried to open it but my computer informed me that it could not do this as it is not a registry file. Wondered if you had any suggestions

The file downloaded is a Zip File. (This is a compressed archive file containing the files you need. You need a copy of WinZip to extract the registry files from this.) Extract the .reg files and save them on you computer. Then open the one you want to use (the lock) by double-clicking on it.
