How can I fix a creaking sound that is coming from a carpeted floor?

The floor in one of the upstair bedrooms makes a creaking noise whenever someone walks over it. The floor is carpeted. How can this be fixed without having to replace the carpet?

It can`t!

The carpet will have to be lifted, the creaking floorboards identified, screw it/them down securely with size 10 screws then replace the carpet.

There are no short cuts
