renault traffic fuel problem 02 diesel 1.9?

renault traffic 1.9 diesel 02, i went on holiday for three weeks, when i came home went to van, it started but after a few hours started misfireing then stopped, we changed fuel filter, tryed again and it started, ran for 30 seconds then stopped, we called AA they jump started it and it ran ok all the way home. we started it next day ran it for 20 mins all ok then it stopped and again wont start, AA said it showed egr valve on fault code but it seems like fuel. we have taken it to renault they say low fuel pressure was on fault code and it will cost £2000.00 to repair, e.g take head off and replace all injectors to start, then if that does not cure it they will try the pump, and so on, which i think is a crock. can someone point me down a easier route please. there was never a problem until we left it for three weeks, it has done 175000 miles ,thanx

renault trafic 05, 1.9 diesel, cut off ant will not start,(can start with easy start for few seconds) diagnose it and got few error codes which cannot be deleted, one of its: low commonrail pressure,
: REPLACED: common rail pressure sensor, high pressure pump sensor, high pressure pums (2differents), checked all wiring loom between engine and ecu, checked ECU and IMMO ecu with ecu electricion, he said its ok, also replaced it with another van ecu, immo, key and reader got SAME ERROR FAULTS and still nor start, checked wirring loom again, looks ok,
ANY IDEAS???? fuel is coming to the high pressure pump, but not going out from it , this van has no low pressure pump in the tank

any ideas what else to check???
also checked power on engine ecu pins, OK
negative cables ok

HAVE no more IDEAS,
HELP me PLEASE,
tell me any stupid idea what I skip

Just this week I've had a 2006 Trafic dcticdtibtec something in my workshop for a pas pump and a service. Pas pump went on fine as did the service until I find I can't bleed the fuel system post filter renewal, in spite of using a low pressure electric lift pump as the priming bulb had failed; hmmmm...

Check the obvious: that I've fitted the filter head correctly and the filter is correct, seals are sat correctly etc etc.

After much head scratching and obviating separate components trying to find a blockage/air leak I decided to remove the tank and check for blocked something at the tank sender/pipe connections.

There was much goop/sludge and some grit substance blocking the 'swirl pot' area of the unit.

I thoroughly cleaned the tank unit and tank, blew the pipe work through and refitted the assembly.

Hey presto still had an air leak.

I know what you're thinking "he's missed the original issue"; not so, but two faults in the same system at the same time? a rotten coincidence for sure (maybe jacking the van up to drop the oils upset the stuff in the tank). Anyhow the priming bulb clearly wasn't working and as that part is constantly squeezed to prime the system and the material is a bit crap and as it had stopped working at sometime, I cut it out and replaced it with a length of hose. Re bled the system with my 12volt pump and it bled through fine and the van starts and runs as it should.

The moral of the story is this: no matter who you are; swearing doesn't help (but breaking something does) lol.

In my long experience "Renault" is now synonymous with "The cars that get air in their fuel lines" ( I have a MK3 Espace which does this and a friends Grand Espace is the same) I've just taken out my fuel tank which awaits inspection but what I have noticed is loads and loads of those Nylon push-fit fuel couplings. Presumably these have O rings in them and presumably the O rings harden or shrink with age. Possibly I can run in a new one-piece line as at the moment the vehicle is basically a scrap car. It would however fire-up when towed with a Land Rover as with the Renault engine spinning faster than the starter could turn it good fuel would be sucked through.

I used to dream of owning a Renault Espace but in actual fact the car is a nightmare. I also know now that many Espaces get scrapped because of the air-in-the-diesel problem.

renault traffic 03 plate drove fine then lost power and stoped and wont start again .i have had two coustermers with same problem ,The end of the hiy presser pump on the engine brakes up and stops pumping fual in two the common rail or it spins in side and just catches some times so engine will start and run for a mile or so then looses power and stopes .two check it takes about 30 minits if its bosh pump . At the end is aluminium casing with 4 stare bolts undo it look inside and check shaft hasont broke. hope this helps some one.

Hi,
I have a renault trafic 1.9 dci 100, year 2005.
8 months ago the glow lamp started to get on and off now and then, the manual says it is either a water in the deisel filter or another more serious reason. I just replaced the filter (and of course all the accumulated water within) and every thing went well, the lights went off permanently.
Last couple of week the lights (glow lams) showed of again, also come and go, when I visited the garage (for another reason) I told the mechanic about it, he told just to ignore it.
Last week my car got in the limp mode ; low rpm no matter how far I press the paddle, no power , maximum speed was 40 km/h, of course the glow lamp was on, and hardly managed to reach home.
I searched the net for hours to find a solution, found many diffirent opinions but the majority of them was to blame the EGR and MAF.
For me - I am not a specialist- it was the first time hearing of the EGR and the MAF, so I started a new search to see what they are, I saw many pages explain how to clean/change them, many youtubes also show how to. At first I was hesitated to do it myself or just bring it to the garage, I had no idea how difficult it would be, at last I decided to get my hands in dirt and do it by myself.
I started with the MAF because I thought it is easier and to judge my knowladge in mechanich, I was surpriced how easy it could be ! Withen minutes the maf was out and on th ground ! This unexpected seccess tempted me to give the egr a try , especially the motor upper plastic cover was open and the air-filter-box was removed (to reach the maf) and Im looking at the egr directly in front of me, so there were just three bolts and holla… the egr was on the floor!
I was shocked because of what I found in egr and its host : a ton of a black carbon, no openning or spring or aperture was there, just a black block of carbon.
Following the instruction which I read, and the movies on youtube, I cleaned bothe of the MAF and the EGR, reinstalled them back and run the car… . but the glow lamp still there ! Switched the car off and run it again and holllaaaaa, the light went of permanently !!
My advice here is this : if you can use a rench and have a 30 minutes to open these two 20 min to clean, and another 20 min to reinstall then make yourself -and your car- a favour by doing it yourself, that would save you a lot of money and time, even if it doesn't work for your car, then you just gave it a necessary service that it needs.

I have a movano 2.2 DCI kept cutting out after tests still none the wiser so had a play myself with only general knowledge of basic engines I found the problem was the fuel filter bleed nipples were letting air in

Dont no if some1 can help me ive got a vivaro 02 plate that wont start. It ran out of fuel so put some fuel in and still wouldnt start, for some odd reason the fuel pump went so put a new fuel pump in and got it started for 5 mins i then switched it off to build the van back up but then i wont start again, for some odd reason im not getting fuel up to the filter now, i put a live from the tank and then i get the fuel coming but still wont start. Ive been told the ecu has gone into crash mode and will need reprogramming.. And help??

Munir, April 2014
To everyone with traffic, vivaro etc. Try removing fuel filter altogether. After a lot of fartin and f**kin about turns out aftermarket filter was causing the problem. Might save ya a few quid.!

Norton, March 2014
I have the same problem more or less on a 05 DCI 80 ,have been told it may only be the hand primer which has a pin prick hole or a new fuel pump.
I also have been told that only a Renault dealer can fit it as it must be (keyed in) and only a Renault dealer can do this? Is this true.
Also what would be the cost (roughly).

I have a trafic 54 plate has had a new fuel pump new injector but still will not run any ideas

Paul, September 2013
i have a 02 trafic 1.9 doing exact same thing. it would stop and be hard to start and keep going. it would nearly die out and struggled when trying to rev. put on computer and low fuel pressure. i got a leak test done on injectors but grand. it was dirt in tank clogging up the mesh where fuel leaves tank. i took inlet pipe of filter and blew back into tank with air gun on compressor. cured my problem but it only temp fix. if that cures in then you need to take tank off and clean it. its pretty easy just 2 straps hold it in place. then unscrew the top where the gauge and pipes are. hope this helps.

dazza31, May 2013
Just had low pressure in common rail on 56 plate Master/Movano. Engine cutting out under load. Always restarted after switch off but sometimes doing it every 20 secs so undrivable. AA man trys blanking off EGR valve. No fix. Mobile technician says it must be an injector so he performs leak off and they are all fine. Then he changes pressure regulator on high pressure pump. No fix. Finally trys fuel filter - had not been changed for 45,000 miles and totally brown and clogged with shit. Changed that and it works perfectly!

Vernon, March 2013
my trafic was going into limp mode all the time, before you spend any money on any parts i suggest you check all your pipes right from your air intake box. i spent a lot of money on parts (fuel pressure switch etc and recovery 3 times) at a garage that showed various fault codes in the end i took things into my own hands after reading this is a common fault it was in the end a loose sensor on the turbo pipe all i did was put some heat silicone round it to stop it coming loose and its solved the problem (that was 4 months ago). if the engine sensors show a slight fault on how much air etc is coming in it will put you straight into limp mode. so before you rush into spending money check all clips and pipes to make sure there are no loose connections. it could save you a mint!

hi i have had an ongoing problem with my renault master low pressure, engine light flashing, van not starting jus turning over, i had it read by renault they told me the tdc sensor, air sensor, fuel pressure, and maybe i needed a new key, i had new glow plugs fitted but not the relay i have been told to do this but havent as yet, tdc sensor fitted and now ive been told the ecu switch needs to be looked at, can anyone help as im a girl and no bugger all about what to do first lol

my van is in a limp mood and i need help is there any answer

david, February 2013
Hi, right as with it seems a lot of you, I too have had this recurring problem with the glow plug/engine management light coming on and the van going into limp mode but up unit last week I have just turned the ignition off and then back on again and it comes back it life. This time tho it didn’t work!! So RAC man came out said according to his diagnostic gizmo it was showing a fuel pressure fault but he did another check and said the fuel pressure was ok?!?! . . So despite all his efforts couldn’t sort it, he then rang a mate of his who worked in a Renault dealership who suggested the MAF (well no surprise there then !!!!!) So new MAF (£30 ebay) that didn’t work so new turbo pressure valve (£40 ebay) still no joy so made a list from all the suggestions on this forum and over this weekend set to work checking them all 1 by 1. . . So today just as I was about to pull out my last bit of hair and phone the scrap yard to come pick it up I thought did try one more thing! . . . . . Engine running on tick over I took off each fuel return pipe connectors that are linked together and fit into the top of each injector, there seem to be a lot of air coming out at first which was a bit suspect and then a nice stream of fuel! Then I took of the fuel pressure sensor on top of the fuel rail and there seem to be a lot of crud in the hole in the rail so cleaned that out and also blew out the small hole in the sensor itself with an airline, put it all back together again and hey presto it works!!!!!!!! Running like a dream again! So worth a try for all thos still having problems! . . . So in my case I’m guessing it was either an airlock in the fuel return system or crud in the fuel pressure sensor! . . . Anyone want to buy a nice well looked after Renault Trafic?????? :-)

bomber, December 2012
Hi, i have got a 06 plate renault trafic which as been great up till 2 months ago when i went to start the van up it would not start staight away, it took longer and longer each day. i took it to a garage and after looking at my van they said it was durty fuel and they got rid of the fuel and cleaned the tank plus putting in a new fuel filter in to start with and then said it was an injector after they could not get it started, once they got it started it still was not running right the garage now said it was the rest of the injectors and wants to change all of them and that should do it. No that did not do it and the van was back in the garage within 24 hours, now having the glow plugs changed.

This has not chaged anything the van is still getting longer and longer to start, but some times it will start first time if i park it on a hill facing upwards.

anyone any idears!!!

Chris, September 2012
I looked through this blog when my Renault trafic CDI 100 was giving me problems. I've got to say ,what a help reading this forum was. First I went for the egr valve nd as what was written on here I gave it a right good clean. Clogged wasn't the word. Anyhow still more problems. A guy had written about two red wires coming from fuse box worn. So I checked and bingo, down behind the head light cable virtually broken. It had been rubbing on main body. Still problems. Took all sensors off and sprayed wd40. Then a switch or sensor with two black pipes going to it ,to the right of the engine mounted under the water bottle was red hot, I disconnected the switch (sensor) pulled the two pipes off and connected them together bypassing this part.
Thrown some diesel injecter cleaner in the fuel filter after I had checked the filter for crap. Bingo got the same power as the day I bought it. Worth checking these parts if you know your engine has never been touched. Thanks again for everyone's questions and answers.

my van 02 plate it lacked power when first started for 10 seconds or so for a week prior to it failing then i got told it was maf and high pressure fuel rail sensor so changed then got told its a break in loom but i do not think it is there are no codes but the van illuminates stop flashing and flassing mil lamp in red when cranking any ideas injectors 4 ohms cut of solenoid or regualtor 17 ohms does the regulator power open ie power to pass fuel i have no pressure on steel pipe to rail when cracking even when cranking if the engine is cranking can i blank off metering solenoid for testing purpose and crack all injectors to test pump in situ this will point me to managment or high pressure fuel pump fail???? i have plenty of fuel during the prime ie 10 seconds or so of first turning ignition on but should it stop after this on low pressure side ie just after filter even when cranking i really like this van as do my kids and just want help do not know if to go buy ecu loom sensors or pump please help anyone that knows there stuff feel free to call on 07557791190 im in south yorkshire so advice or if you can come to me for a price and fix

carl m, June 2012
WOAH THE HORSES FOLKS!!!!
If you scan the internerd for this problem, you will find a whole host of people paying big money chasing this problem around the engine bay, with clever 'mechanics' showing you faults on their wee computers. Watch out for them reading faults whilst turning the ignition, of course it will read faults!
Anyhow, i had the same problem with my Trafic 1.8DCi 2005, never a bother and then one day , splutter, splutter and stop.
Mechanic came out and first thing he says ,with a smile,is change the injectors. I knew it wasn't the injectors because the battery drained so fast trying to restart. To cut a long familiar story short, I fixed it myself and all it cost me was a bottle of coke! WHAT? Yep, I pulled off every electrical plug one by one to see what effect it had on the engine, until I found one which upon touching gently, stopped the engine. That plug led to a large wiring loom which goes to the fusebox, behind the passenger side headlight, from this fusebox you will find two large red leads and it is these leads which rub off teh body of the van, specifically where they go through one of the engine bulkheads. they loose their insulation and drain power from the engine, causing all sorts of faults to flash up on computers. I fixed mine by cutting a coke bottle open and wrapping it around these wires therefore preventing any contact with the body.
Van runs perfect for 6 months since. Don't be afraid to take off the headlight and bits behind it, its big LEGO and you will find this moneymaking designed-in problem!

Hi All
Have a 02 trafic 1.9 dci had a problem cutting out turn off then back on and would start and run okay for a while then same again. Eventually it failed and would not start, only started with easy start. Had injectors leak tested found 3 where faulty causing loss of pressure in fuel rail so wont start. Changed injectors (lucky to get them out of the head) and now starts fine bit wont rev cleanly until it hits 2500 -3000 rpm then revs fine feels sluggish as well no warning lights. Going to change boost pressure valve tomorrow. Any ideas anyone.

Hosemaster, April 2012
hi bob, thanks for the inform, 15 mins to sort van, all it was a blocked hole in the vac pump just by the egr valve, took it off, was some gunge stuff in there couldnt blow it out, stuck a pin down there cleared the blockage and voila, van is sorted.
dave it only took me about 15 mins to diagnose/fix the prob from bobs info, took black rubber pipe off from the little valve with the 2 black pipes on, had no suction on 1 there, tried to blow down it also, no joy, the turbo wastegate on the other pipe could be heard to operate, traced it back to the little black plastic valve just to the right of the egr valve, it has a connection the goes to the servo brake the 1 with big pipe at the back and a little black pipe to the side, i took it off( 2 screws hold it on and a bit fiddley) and found where the small pipe goes to be blocked, pin in made hole again, back together problem sorted. all i can say bob thanks again.

johnboy, April 2012
hi Bob where do you work as my van has the same problem and I live in hertfordshire id like to get someone who knows what their doing to have a look cheers

Dave, April 2012
I work a lot on these renault/Vauxhall vans in an independant garage. So have seen most of the usual suspect problems!
Loss of power low down (ie: no go & lifeless acceleration), and EML light coming on after a while is often caused by sluggish or non operation of turbo wastegate. May display EGR fault! Check with a mirror to see if the arm on the turbo closes within a few seconds of engine startup. This must also be quite swift ie: with 2 seconds, not 3-4 seconds..If not check there is sufficient vacuum from the small outlet pipe on the Vac pump, this is often blocked, very common. Squirt carb cleaner into the small pipe bit ON THE PUMP and blow with airline to clear, the hole inside is tiny and carbons up after years of use. If vac is good go for the turbo wastegate valve on the side of a metal plate below the coolant header tank. The one you want has TWO pipes on it. If vac is going in and nothing is coming out turbo wastegate will remaim open (in full dump) and thus no boost. Hope this helps. Failing this take a live data reading from a good scanner and see what the boost reading gets up to. Should boost above ambient pressure quite quickly in a linear manner in relation to engine speed. This will tell you if it's a boost problem or something else, and saves a fortune guessing at the customers expence. Everyone happy, normally!
Bob. Target Auto. Hertfordshire.

Hi All

I had the same problem with glow plug light comming on and losing power and after hundreds of pounds of garage bills and wrongly diagnosed readings i changed the boost pressure valve and the van now drives like new. I got the part from Vauxhall for £50.04p

Hope this helps.

On a 2004 Vivaro the part is on the right hand side next to the MAP sensor and it has an electrical plug and two vacuum pipes. very easy to change, i done this whilst still in the Vauxhall dealers car park and took just a couple of minutes.

Good Luck

hi fella had same problem on my vivaro , have you tryed cleaning the egr valve as i cleaned mine out and it worked great after .

Hi

Glow plug light comes on when going up a hill and lose power. on a flat surface the van struggles to get to 3000 rpm then seems ok past that. feels very lumpy between 2000 and 3000 rpm... had egr, air flow sensor and crank shaft sensor, fuel filter and air filter changed yesterday and if anything the van is worse. cost near £400. any advise would be great thanks

Had same problem with my 1.9 mini bus RAC towed me to Renault (Parks of Ayr) garage 2 days before Christmas, Low pressure on fuel pump, new one fitted and also full kit timming belt for £ 884.00 alls well Millage 125,000

Egr valve changed them all sti wnt start any ideas

I had problems with my 05 traffic cutting out on roads and hicking which got worse. Plugged in diagnostics and injectors faulty. Replaced injectors and various other parts and still no good. After spending 1400 fixing it I took it to dealers and they said injector fault and egr valve, plus other stuff. Total would be over 4000. I lost my job because of this shite van. I honestly would never buy another renault van. Far to complicated even for the dealers, as the injectors were already replaced, and they wanted to change them again. My advice would be never buy a used renault van without warranty. Im changing to a basic landrover which you can fix so easily.

Saf, March 2012
my van has just been with the mechanic for three days and he found that it was the vacuum pump from the turbo had no suction? that was making it have dead throttle on start and then miss firing at about 2500rpm.
he has now bypassed it into the brake servo and the van has never gone so well! the computer was a complete waste of time because it just came up with a lot of faults which were not a problem at all. if your having troubles with your van please check the vacuum pressure from your turbo i think this could be the cure to trafic cancer?!

RobbyP, February 2012
i have a renault swb 05 traffic. it just start to be sluggish have clutch it and rev it up to get past 3000 rev to drive fine when revering there is alot of black smoke coming out there a tearing noise and jumping

Alan, November 2011
Hi we have a 2007 Renault trafic van.
I have a problem with the speedo jumping up and down and sometimes sitting flat on zero and leaving the van in safe mode.

I have tried new clocks, changed the abs unit and the loom has been looked at a couple of times.

The van never shows a fault on the dash and seems to do it on a wet morning after being parked in the rain all night. After driving for an hour or so when the engine is hot (dry) it normally works again and will do for the rest of the day. Rarely if ever has the problem in dry warm weather.

Van is driving we part from this and there are no funny noises etc.

I have tried to seal around the windscreen to stop water getting in on the engine but did not help, although still a bit gets in.

Had it with many places and no joy but big bills to investigate!!

Please help

hi guys hope this will help some of you,our traffic suffered very similar symptoms after many hours fault finding tracked it down to water getting into mass airflow connection.every time it rained water got in,sprayed connector inside and out with wd40 van ran perfect again, good luck

had a similar problem with 06 traffic started ran for 20 to 30 seconds then stopped.Went like that for a while then got very sluggish.Got to a stage where it would not get up over 2000 rpm.Got a friend to check it out to be told turbo was jocked.Changed turbo and going ok since.

53 plate trafic sl27 dci 100. Bought in November 2010. Now July 2011. Well, well. New gearbox, clutch, alternator, power steering pump, battery, auxillary drive belt - twice - wrong power steering pump supplied by ECP caused belt to fray and snap twice! Then... timing belt snapped... So, head off, re-conditioned - 4 new valves and guides. Head back on, new gaskets, new timing belt kit, another new auxillary belt, oil, filters, coolant and the second correct power steering pump. Now it won't start. Fires up on turn of the key, but will not run, low fuel pressure coming out of pump, god knows. Never a renault again! Should have know from having a 5 GT Turbo as a young man back in the day...

Chris, July 2011
Try replacing the fuel pressure sensor. Get a second hand one from a breaker £40 ish. New = £200+.

I am having similar problems, I have also had intermittent imob fault. and replaced ECU, Imob module and matching keyfob from a working Donor vehicle.
This has resolved the flashing imob problem however the van is refusing to start.
I don't know much about the high pressure pumps on these vans are they coded to the ECU?
looking at the pump I dont think it is but after cracking off the high pressure out pipe I am getting a small dribble of fuel surely this should be a jet, after unscrewing the fuel cap I heard a loud noiose from the tank, i guess there must of been an air lock..... any advise?

hi i have a 04 trafic, went on holls for 2 weeks came back and problem starting also at 1100 revs engine m light comes on and engine trys to dye if i rev over this it drives perfect, but a nightmare taking off i look a learner driver, this is going on now 8 months, i have changed crank and ox sensor , am so sick of it and will never buy a renault again.. can any 1 help. cheers

liam, April 2011
If you have a problem with a lack of power eg; stop light flashes on and off then runs fine again pull over at service station and undue fuel cap if you hear a vacume air suck in, Drill 2 holes in fuel cap to let air in, will run fine.

Jason speedy vivaro, April 2011
I had a similar problem with my 02 trafic, it died on me and would only start and run at low power for a few miles, changed fuel filter and while at it found some white jelly type stuff in the fuel, took the tank out and found more of this gunge and a big long clump of it in the fuel line, blew this out with an air line and it was fine after that, apparently the gunge is some sort of alge that grows in your tank due to 5% biodiesel being used in supermarket fuels, not sure if its true or not but it sort of makes sense

IF I HAD READ ALL THE POSTS I COULD HAVE SAVED A LOT OF MONEY! In short over the last four months I have had glow plug light/electrics light switching on (usually in 4th/5th climbing or on flats but not accelertating). Limp home mode was on and I got used to switching off and doing a rolling start and keeping the revs high. Since, I have spent weeks without my van (Renault Trafic Dci 100 2004, 125000 miles) in garages and dealerships and it has been emotional. The result was an oxygen sensor in Nov 10, problem came back after a month, a new egr valve in Jan 11, problem came back, another new egr fitted by the dealer as the previous was not a renault genuine part, problem came back, mass air sensor this month and all was going well until yesterday the light came back but when cold, once the engine was warm it went like new. If the light comes on again I'm getting rid of the van, I think it's a great van if it worked!!!!!!!! I wish I would have part exchanged it with a main dealer for a newer model on appearence of the light, they can't diagnose it anyway and simply follow code after code without actually looking at the bigger picture of what might be going wrong.

TT, February 2011
Hope this helps some of you. I had nearly all the problems listed on this site.
AA diagnosed wrongly three times as did several garage rip off merchants and after replacing pumps sensors and filters etc it turned out to be,a poxy fuel line kinking.
A common fault in 02/03 trafic is the fuel line above the tank kinks.
Hence intermittent fuel problems and managment lights.
My fix was to stretch the line and cable tie it to bodywork.
Van drove fine after that.

Vision, February 2011
Got 02 traffic 85000 miles, wouldnt go above 2500 revs replaced egr valve and air mass meter, running perfect since, total cost incl labour under £500

barry, February 2011
Hi, the same fault came up on my van last week, it was the lift pump in the fuel tank. They diagnosed it very simply by disconnecting a fuel line, getting the pump to work (ignition on/turning over) and nothing came from the tank.

Thanks to all who posted here, after a nightmare of mechanics and dealers I decided to to take a punt and risk £115 on mass air flow meter, after 2 garages and a main dealer why not (after towing here towing there decarbonised egr valve.. 2 new glow plugs..NEW egr valve £700 and growing) I know nothing about mechanics but as the main dealer had left my airbox loose with 1 zip tie in the corner I thought they are as thick as me I'll have a go. Once the air box is off 10 mins to change the valve,Took it for a test run Job done. Without all you posters I would still be at the mercy of these greedy, corrupt, inept, thieves Thankyou

Got an 05 renault trafic 85k on clock it died in middle of rush hour and had to get it towed to a garage, who kept it for a week and couldn't mend it. Had it towed to a diesel specialist who kept it another 2 weeks and charged me just over a £1000 for a new ecu. Very expensive as I had to hire a car for 3 weeks to get to work. 14 months later glow plug light comes on intermittantly and goes into limp mode, took it to auto electician who says it is egr valve but he has no mechanic to fix it 5 days later get it towed to another garage also bragging about their diagnostic equipment decarbonised egr valve changed oil and filter (£180) Next day no power up to 2500 revs then goes like a rocket. Working right beside main dealers so decides to take it in (glow plug light still coming on) They clip test it and decide it really is the glow plugs 2 (£90) Happy days drive away 1 mile not revvin again back to Renault who decide needs a NEW egr valve (£180) mechanics taken it for a test run everything is fine have a nice xmas. Next day not revvin everywhere closed. 2 weeks later started engine, low oil light on top up with oil still not revving up to 2500 Who are these people, I told the wife if I ever think about buying another Renault have me commited to Broadmoor

Joe, January 2011
traffic wont start off key just turns over it will start with a push straight away any ideas

Had a 2.2dci Master running fine just cut out on the road, would crank but not fire.Tried diagnostic computer and it would not read Engine ECU because the live wire going to the injection computer(ecu) was broke somewhere turned out to be fuel cut off switch wires/pins had got corroded and broken in the grey block connecter in the fuse box, just bypassed them and it fired up straight away. I hope this info helps somebody. (Of course this was after hours of trying things with the fuel system and tracing wiring looms a nightmare!)

Timmyk, December 2010
the person who was advised to use cilit bang - did it work we have the same problem with our injector at the moment which is giving us nightmares

have a 05 1.9 renault trafic with 137000 miles on the clock have it, from it had 18000 miles, was going to manchester with daughter for uni , drove van from my house to ferry, about 50 miles van doing its usual cutting out but, sorting itself out when revs are up, parked van on ferry , after 3 hour crossing ,went back to van and wont start , towed off ferry, got mechanic to check, fuel was going to one injector and pumps are ok, van turns over, but seems to be no revs or throttle, anybody got any ideas, also friend says that all four injectors have to be getting fuel before these vans start , is he correct

TERRY MAC, September 2010
i would do a leak off test on the 4 injectors before doing anything else then u would know which injector or how many is faulty

My traffic will only run if I keep pumping the belows, as soon as I stop it dies?

Richard, September 2010
We have had exactly the same prob with our renault trafic 1.9 O2 plate diesel. It went into renault and they have said that the fuel tank lining has correded away and we need a whole new fuel system at about £2000. Seems thee renaults all have the same problems. MAyb its a manufacturers fault?!?!? Should we be looking further into this?

Theresa, September 2010
hi ive got avivaro 1.7 nightmare starting once its running it cuts out i have to turn the key of for a second then back on ive changed the fuel filter iremoved the fuel tank and checked it as this model does not have a pump in the tank . its as if its not getting the amount of fuel it needs ..grrrrr can anybody help please steve

steve, August 2010
3 Cheers to Catman 2000, I have spent weeks and hundreds, £700 to be exact, on my 03 trafic, after it hit a puddle and died.Three different garages and the AA all said low pressure pump, so after replacing low pressure pump. mass flow , injectors and high pressure pump sensor and millions of computer resets, it was a kink in the fuel line.
It was exactly as Catman said, water forced the hose back creating a kink, hence low pressure reading.
So after all the rip off so called mechanics telling I me need this and that, it turns out to be a kink.
Anybody know a way to reset the management lights" stop and oil" from flashing, without a computer?

Visiondvd, July 2010
My 95000 mile 53 plate Trafic has been a gem really considering the hard time it gets, but recently had a problem of it cutting out anywhere over 2500 revs. It started after being in a heavy rainstorm and being on the motorway and having been stuck behind a couple of HGVs, taking on huge amounts of spray, although that could have just coincidence.
The STOP light illuminated and it just died. Still rolling I turned the ignition off and back on which brought it back to life, but hit the gas and it would do it again. Drive it steadily and it was fine.
I had it diagnosed by a garage buddy on the Snap On machine and it came up with the crankshaft alignment sensor, high pressure pump and something else which I can't remember just now. The obvious route was the least expensive so he ordered a sensor for me. £20 and ten minutes under the van saw the new sensor fitted and it runs fine.
To get to it you need to get the front end up on ramps if you can't get use of a lift, remove the undertray and you'll find the sensor on the bell housing casing close to the block and near the front of the van. It's a doddle to change.
Hope this info is of use to someone.

My vivaro 1.9 cdti 55 plate has give me trouble from the day i bought it at the moment I have a turbo that is constantly open you hear it whistle all the way up from 1000 revs to 2500 revs and down again the waste gate does not seem to close I have changed the maf the map and the waste gate control solenoid the waste control solenoid seems to let air pass through all the time. Also I have a dodgy injector can't get it out a guy at Vauxhall told me to use cilit bang that stuff off the tv adverts he said leave the injector soaking in cilit band for 24 hours and it should dissolve the oxide that is stopping the removal because it has fused the aluminium on the head to the steel on the injector, I am going to give this a try, anyone else heard of this?

Roy, July 2010
try replacing crank shaft sensor; had same problem, , i allso replaced glow plug,s at same time, van went great after so turned out to be replacing one of they two part,s

I have a renault master 2.2 dci33 53 plate. (ex british gas van) Its never been the fastest of vans but never seemed to have a problem with pulling a heavy load. A few months ago the van gradually started to lose power. i had it checked on a computer, there were no faults. The turbo has been checked and is in good condition.
PLEASE CAN ANYONE GIVE ME ANY ADVISE ON WHAT TO CHECK. Thanks

Have 53 renault 1.9dci had it from new great van, had problem with lack of power, stop switch off and turn key restart run fine then glow plug warning light back on lack of power again. Renault dealer checked it over same old rubbish mega bucks to fix it.....blah blah blah, anyway took it to a friend who owns his own garage and he tested it and identified the fault within 5 mins to be air flow sensor and air flow valve approx £40 each and very easy and quick to renew. Hope this help someone not to be ripped off from dealers.

Hi,
I also have 02 traffic, which the turbo went on at 82,000 miles. It is now in the garage for yet another turbo!!! I am hoping to fight the garage on this as its only done 6,000miles on new turbo.
As a woman, i know little about engines, but i wonder is anyone else with these vans experiencing these problems,
Rgards, Mal

Mal, March 2010
I have just resolved a fault with cutting out on the road and then hard to start.IT appeared to be fuel related,I could hear the low pressure fuel pump in the fuel tank working put a clear plastic hose between the inlet pipe and fuel filter and observed a lot of air bubbles, droped the fuel tank just 4 bolts removed the fuel pump/fuel guage unit,on closer examanation their was pieces of white plestic from the housing lodged in the induction hole of the pump, cleaned it out and happy days. This is an opel vivaro 1.9 same piecs of crap as the traffic.Hope this helps someone i have spent a week trying to find the low fuel pressure fault

tony, February 2010
had the same as most of you lack of power until turbo comes in and it turned out to be the air mass meter just before the air box on the top pipe But you have to make sure the egr valve is shuting propley or the air mass sensor will read wrong and pos burn out i had mine welded shut for a bit, worth a try, look on ebay for both bits

hope it helps pete

pete, February 2010
had problem with van 03 plate trafic, started after hitting large puddle ,van would run for 30 seconds then chuck it, discovered fuel line had been forced back and kinked above diesel tank ,AA and dealers said it was low fuel pressure and needed new pump, found kink in fuel line myself, also had power loss problem in every gear below 2500 revs, disconnected electrical plug on top of air flow meter and van has run like new ever since.

catman 2000, February 2010
i have same problem on my 54 plate renault traffic just stated running in limp mode any one help thanks

pete, January 2010
I have two of these Vans which have been really very good until now. Both around 150k showing same faults discribed below IE glow plug light on, no power, flick key and away again!
Really annoying and cant continue to use for business (Taxi) until solved but can't bear the idea of renault just swapping bits at my expense until problem solved. Will check all the below but do think Renault should be made to cough as its clearly their design/build at fault.

Tim, December 2009
Correction on answer below.
Sorry, meant to say low power until turbo kicked in, and when turbo did kick in would just shoot off like a bat out of hell. Was happening between 2000 and 3000 revs. Hope this helps out.

mike, December 2009
I had my trafic and as soon as i started it would lose power heater plug lights came on, serv light etc and after loads of people advising me many things and computers saying different things it was my cam shaft sensor loose, plugged in tidy and worked fine.

Then I had low power as turbo wasnt coming in tidy and that was my air mass flow meter. Hope this information helps you as at the time I could of burnt my van to ashes. Done my head right in.

I HAVE A RENAULT TRAFFIC 1.9 SWB , THE VAN IS FINE EXCEPT FOR ONE ANNOYING PROBLEM, THE VAN WILL ALL OF A SUDDEN LOOSE POWER, IN ANY GEAR, THE HEATER PLUG LIGHT COMES ON, AND JUST DRAINS THE ENGINE, IF I PUT MY FOOT ON THE CLUTCH FOR 5 SECONDS THE LIGHT GOES OUT AND POWER RESTORED, I HAVE PUT IT INTO 5 DIFFERENT GARAGES INCLUDING RENAULT ,AND ALL HAVE PUT IT ONTO A DIOGNOSTIC MACHINE, AND ALL COME UP WITH SOMETHING DIFFERENT, COST ME £200 PER TIME TO HAVE IT DIAGNOSED, SURLEY RENAULT THIS IS A DESIGN FAULT AND SHOULD BE SORTED BY RENAULT ? BESIDES THIS I REALY HAVENT HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE VAN. HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE

NIC MILES, December 2009
happening to my renault traffic also - no power until the turbo comes in approx 2500 revs. 57 plate.

andrew, December 2009
Have read through all the q's and anwsers here and hope to use info to solve my similar problem. Rubbish starter in the cold for last yr so fitted a kenlow heater...great! Now, after a long spell sitting unused the van will not rev...no power...max revs after 10 mins of messing is about 2600. Sounds ok, no smoke, clean air and fuel ???? any ideas?

Tim, December 2009
I have a very simular problem to. 2002 trafic, 114k, recent new turbo, clutch, booster selnoid x2. Start in the morning, dies straight away. restart, doesnt rev even when foot flat down, then slowly after about 5mins will rev. but then very very sluggish between 1000rpm and 2100rpm then the turbo kicks it and its fine until you change gear. if i dont return in ther next gear above 2100rpm its very sluggish again. Any help?

Adam, November 2009
My Renault 1.9 diesel (04 plate Trafic owned from new)suddenly started running like a bag of nails. No power and would cut out. Restarts OK then does the same thing a few hundred yards down the road. Called the AA out to it, they removed air fiter and got down to the cables feeding the injectors, one of which was fitted very tight with a 90 degree bend in it. The guy slackened the wires and took the right angle out of the wire and low and behold problem solved for about 3 months. When it started again I did exactly the same as the AA and so far it's been fine :-) why do they put such poor wiring into a sophisticated fuel system - it's beyond me!
Wouldn't buy another one although it is a good drive.

Robin H, November 2009
my vivaro when started in the morning or after being stood for at least 6 hour starts up but the engine speed dips really low for 5 or 6 seconds then slowly builds up to normal tickover wont rev up for another 10 seconds then runs ok all day, i have been told the ECU needs recalibrating (vauxhall database) they call it chuddle. these engines dont like bio fuel but the main fuel suppliers like shell and BP put between 2.5% and 5% in their desiel.. bio fuel can cause a fungus in the fuel system i have seen it on fuel filters on cummins engines as i work for arriva bus and also found a funny looking lumpy sludge in my fuel filter housing which looked very similar to the fungus i saw on the cummins.

Roy, November 2009
hi there are correct the reason the head has to come off is because the injectors sieze in the head, we had to put a new cylinder head on one because of this very fault

nick, November 2009
02 Vivaro 127K miles to date. So called experts ? Engine stopped, with all dash lights on Restarted on low power to get home 1 mile Then refused to start Engine flty light on Transported to Main Renault dealer Diesel pump low pressure £800 to replace. Now have 70's Transit engine sound, plus a rattle loss of torque and top end power. Took it back to main dealer they are saying that I have a engine problem Yep I know that. Valves, cam or piston wear. What a load of Cr**. First time I have heard of instant wear. They want me to pay for inspection and repair. Now off to diesel specialist for report and try and get main dealer to admit problem. Can't understand why changing HP pump would cause this. Just for the record had van from new treated with respect. Broke down 3 times first year transported back to main dealer each time Ten twice in 2nd year Been OK for 60K. Great to drive but built with car mechanics. Next van old Sprinter unless you know better.

Corporate.Mushroom, October 2009
iv got an04 vivaro,167,00 miles, ran well, uses no oil, water etc, emissions are low, went into limp home, fitted new egr valve, air mass meter, and boost control valve, starts 1st time every time, runs for about 10 mins, pulls strong thtu every gear, then wont rev, stop it,or even flick the key whilst driving, goes well again for anything from 5mins to 20mins,same again !,had i to vauxhall who say fault codes read"insufficient boost",cant tell me whether it needs new turbo or ecu ?

Are you sure its fuel. I just had the same problem after coming back from my hols, after filing up with fuel, the day after started running rough getting worse by the hour. The heater plug light comes on which means ether water in fuel or electric problem. In my mind are 3 weeks ago I had air flow metre changed. Been running great since then, so convinced its fuel as that’s what people suggested; even one place said its injectors (HA!). So I drained all fuel from tank new filter new fuel, start van still rough. Don’t know what made me do this, suppose its knowing you cant trust people to do a proper job these days always saying the worst to get more money out of you, so took a closer look at airflow metre to find it hadn’t been put back properly and air filter box was all lose because they must of dropped nuts and couldn’t be bothered to replace them, even the big jubilee clip for air flow metre was loose at bottom of pipe, after fixing everything back nice and snug van goes great. Few nearly forked out for new injectors.

Dave, September 2009
It could be a few faults possible cambelt timing or if you have no fuel to the fuel rail then check the diesel pump solenoid.

Alex, August 2009
the common rail 'internal' build high pressure sensor fails, which puts the controls into a sort of panic mode, failsafe. Below 2000 revs there is nobody home (torque is down to zero), above 2k rpm power kicks in, but not smootly. You've the impression of sitting on a drunken engine.
This component can not be replaced without replacing the full bus. Something like 900 €.

Bruno Tombeur, August 2009
my 1.9 dci lost power all of a suden.went into limp mode starts ok but no power.no lights on and nothing on my code reader(135,000 miles).
Turned out to be the EGR valve fitted with new gasget and a good clean out .
Now fine but what a pain .alot of garages i spoke to hav nt got a clue.
be carefull lot of rip offs pretending they can fix it .They just bolt on new bits and hope .expensive for the owner .apart from that a good van .

graham proctor, August 2009
Hi, I have an 03 Traffic in my garage with the same problem. A PIG 2 start in the morning & if leave it 4 an hr or so. So far I have put the Diagnostics onto it & it showed up 12 faults from MAP sensors to EGR valves & when I replaced everything that showed up... GUESS WHAT? I got one last fault code... A ''P'' code. Fuel Temp sensor. From the main dealer this is going to cost the customer over 400 euro. So, I have the part ordered & i'll let U know if this does resolve the problem. 4 the record guys... Stay well away 4rm Renault.

hi i have a vauxhall vivaro, that will drive fine but when you turn it off start it no power for 10seconds at all sometimes turn it back off start it and it clear any ideas how to fix my PROBLEM!!!!!!

Can anyone help I've a 06 Reg Vauxhall Vivaro which is so difiicult to start when cold, also a pig to start when warm. Had the AA out twice they say its glow plugs, Vauxhall dealer says it not.

bought a new (back then) 55plate trafic . 1.9 . for the first 6 months it was back and forth to renault as it was very hard to start . most time had to get AA out . any way after loads of f-ing around at renault - finally it all boiled down to a weak starter motor . it sounded normal to me - but it was a renault RTE guy who was in it when it broke down on him - he diagnosed the starter - they changed this and its never broke down since .

bastardo, February 2009
i recently purchased a renault traffic van 2002.The van just passed the doe.Tank was almost empty and filled it again on my trip down which was over 150 miles away.when i got home when i was coming to a stop the van conked out on me.started it again and ran fine but started to stop again when i was slowing down coming to junctions....Now it will start intermittently and may go for a bit and stop again.Any suggestions please?????

trafic 2003 and others!.. if you lose power or doesnt rev properly or goes into limp mode!! try removing cat converter.. will poss sort the problem and save hundreds in replacing! most diesels dont need a cat will pass M.O.T this is big con!!!!! or so all the mad intellegent people say?
me being sensible would replace.. but talk to a mot guy he would give u info?

hi there ive the the same prob. i changed my pump last year now i have the same prob again.Have you got 12 volt feed to the pump in the tank if not cheque the relay in the fuse box.you can take the fuel pipe of the bottom of the pump that feeds the injectors but be carefull. If no fuel coming out of there your pump is not putting the pressure in to system the rail and the valve is not going to open.Hope this helps

stephen curtis, January 2009
My Trafic 1.9 dci100 starts ok but occasionaly no power all gears no guts have to keep revs high. Looked on various sites like this one to find dealers quoting stupid money to sort out. With my van the problem was that on the back of the vacuum pump there is a small black plastic housing, the hose to the brake servo comes out of it and a smaller pipe which goes to the accelarator thingy! (not a mechanic) so took this off, it has a one way valve in it. The small hose that goes to the accelarator goes into the plastic housing but there seams to be a double wall in this housing and there must be a blockage within the double wall, I inserted a sharpened welding rod in through the small pipe inlet and peirced a very small hole through the inner wall the accelarator thingy now gets more vacuum and the van goes like ---- off a shovel. The van is still running this way after 2 months because this part when I try to get it only comes with the vacuum pump at £75.00. Two screws take this part off and is probably worth about a fiver. This may not sort everyones problems but it did sort mine. I hope that this is of help to someone. If you pull this pipe off the vacuum pump first before you do anything else, you will feel if there is vacuum through the nozzle.

My Trafic would cut out i thought it was a fuel problem but after checking fuel system i found high pressure pump not working but then would. This was tracked down by my brother (clever man) to a broken wire to the fuel cut off switch located by the water resivour. It had rubbed through under electrics box. Good Luck

i had similar problem low power untill turbo kicked in , intermittent stalling etc turned out to be faulty tdc sensor , 120 quid worth clip testing first , flies now

martin, December 2008
Hi I have had the same problem with my van, it is on a 03 renault traffic.
I bought the van from a dealer, it had a new engine and gear box. So i was happy as I thought I was buying a new van in terms of engine etc and its was supplied by Renault.
But it has always been a pig to start, I had an old transit before and it turned over in an instant !!
Anyway I ran the van and on the odd occasion it keep cutting out. I would have to stop and then start it again it did this every so often. But then it got to the stage where this happened every 100 metres. So I took it to my local garage where they serviced it and put it on the the diaog machine and they told me it had a fuel fault. I then rang the guy who i bought it off, as usual (buying from a trader) did not want to know and said well its a new engine and its warranted by renault. So i booked it to renault and they had reference of the engine even though the trader i got it from had fitted it !! It had been fitted some where else. So i booked it in they gave me 2 prices for just tunning a diaog and said it could be either, it was the higher !! anyway they said it was a fuel fault and it to send it back to the gagrage who servied it as it was a leaky fuel filter !!!!!!!! causing the problem
As i know the garage and was just glad to get the van out of Renault, they had reassurred me that was not he case. OO i forgot to mention Renault wanted a bout £3000.00 grand to try and sort the problem.
So at this stage I thought leave it with my local garage, after a diesle specialist loooking at it and checking the injectors etc. Renewing the fuel pump !!!!! blowing out the fuel lines. I thought i had fixed it and well was lighter in the pocket but not as much as i would have been if it was Renault UK. The van now has stopped, stopping but is still a pig to start soooo...... the next thing i can change and the only thing is the Fuel pump in the tank.
Can I ask does the fuel pump make a noise when you turn the ignition on (a gurggling sound)
I can honestly say i would not buy another traffic, viavro etc

p*ssed off van man, November 2008
it would seem that I have the same problem in as much as the van is very sluggish up until about 3000 revs and it is hard work getting up hills also called the aa out but they found no faults what is the answer as it looks like it could cost a fortune and it is not clear on the other answers cheers

nick, November 2008
I have the same problem with my 1.9 primastar van lack of turbo power until 2500 revs, also when in 6 gear and you accelerate hard the engine seems to rev unevenly. Cold mornings cause a very slow start. I have found that most of the common rail renaults engines now have a heater built into the mainfuel filter which helps on cold mornings starts but didnt last when replaced, but did help while it worked.

Mossy, November 2008
I have a very similar problem with my 2.2 dci master.
Dealers have informed me that all 4 injectors failed the leak back test, and my turbo pipe has a split in it. My question is how can all 4 injectors go at the same time?

Roger, October 2008
mine did the same (cutting out radomly) and/or fuel pressure on ecu. After allot of faffing it was a split fuel line after the fuel filter (engine bay) but before the fuel pump (engine belt driven). This was drawing a vacuum as you increased the revs and eventually after enough air was sucked in it cut out on low pressure.

Darren, September 2008
mine did same it was valve wich had shattered pieces had gone into turbo cleaned out and now fine

julie, September 2008
Hi Could I have the same problem (primastar) van ran fine until friday then the van became very sluggish up to 2500 reves then flyes, its as if it a bad case of turbo lag no fault codes or light came up , but was told mass air flow meter was the problem, changed that but still the same any ideas Thanks

steve, September 2008
hi, got the same problem went to main dealer change injectors + one cilynder (sealed injector ) cost 2400£ and guess what ....
still same problem been back to main dealer and they find
fuel pump or engine timer will see agin tomorrow to see if its ok
or not but all that cost fortune ....

hakan, September 2008
Hi, I've got a renault trafic 1.9dci 100. It seems like the turbo is boosting all the time & lack of power in 4th. It started when i changed the oil & all filters & cam belt. I have had it checked out at a few places but they don't know whats wrong (low fuel pres but sorted)?

sol, August 2008
same problem with mine mate i had injectors changed head rebuilt and all along it was crank sensor £25 fix worth trying first

simon, July 2008
Hi Dave, Did you manage to fix your vivaro because I have the same problem with mine. It's got no power and revs slowly untill about 2500 rpm when the turbo kicks in.

stevie, July 2008
got the same prob here 3 weeks holiday and start the engine no problem but some time its like the turbo do not kick
its night mare
whent to the main dealer and they said 1200£
noting shows on the computer but error message say

what to do ?

hakan, July 2008
Hi , just dropped in to this website as i have same problem with a 03 Vauxhall Vivaro 1.9 (same vehicle).
This is what Im experiencing, in the morning the vehicle turns over runs for about 3 secs them cuts out.
If you turn the ignition on/off you'll hear the system bleed as the pump in the fuel tank pumps to the engine, this happens for about 10secs then switches off. Its a self bleed system which puts a burst of fuel to the engine.

Once youve done this and the vehicle starts & stays ticking over the engine has no guts on acceleration until it hits about 2200rpm (turbo kicks in).
Like yours mine has 135,000 mls on the clock, a fuel pump at this mileage would be no surprise.

Before you do anything get a local mechanic to put a clear tube connection at the pump fuel in connection, by doing this you will see if the system is taking in amounts of air through the fuel system. Im heading out now to get some clear pipe Doing this could save you a lot of money , your fault may only be tired seals at the pipes connections, 20 quid at most to replace a few pipes....so suggest you eliminate the fuel lines before you fork out 2K to a dealer.

I used to be a specialist mechanic for a uk importer...suggest you dont take this waffle off the dealer , dealers are great for saying 'The Computer Says' ...rubbish in my opinion as all the basics are overlooked at your expense.Low pressure pump fault if air is tarvelling through it , the computer will show fault with this unit.

go for the easy things first in this order...if theres no plumes of smoke , you have a tank of fuel.

1) turbo pipe hasnt come adrift or rubbed holes in it...this will give an inacurate air flow reading at the sensor.
2) the fuel filter is ok, and the housing sealed properly
3)ensure the fuel is clear and free of air going to the fuel pump in connection.
At this point you have elimated the main faults for the 2 ingredients to make fire , air & fuel)...then its time to look at how they are being delivered into the engine.
If youve got to this stage ok the cost of the job goes up...

Best of luck.

yeh common rail injection system is a pain when you have low fuel pressure. but the taking head off part is a bit extreme. basically the van needs to have a fuel injector leak back test performed on it. this will tell which injector is at fault then it should just be a case of having that replaced or repaired if its just the seal. they can sumtimes become stuck in the cylinder head and be a nightmare to get out
