my mountfield sp470 is horendous to start whats wrong?

my mountfield when starting from cold or even if left for a hour or so is awful to start maybe ten or more pulls. once started runs like a dream and fires up first time in between stops? is it the spark plug ? I am priming before starting

Difficult to say without watching your start procedure, but you are probably not primng enough. On a briggs engine, usually AT LEAST 6 priming strokes are necessary for it to fire up and continue running.
