Need help with Craftsman riding mower that won't start?

I have a 16 hp Craftsman model 917.270670. So when I turn the key I get nothing...no lights, no engine turnover. Installed new battery...fuse is ok. I get power to the solenoid and I can jump start the motor by putting a screwdriver to both posts on the solenoid. Just tried replacing key switch...still nothing. Can the solenoid be bad even it it starts when I use the screwdriver? any other ideas? I also tried bypassing the kill switches. Thx for the help!

seem to have coverd all.wondering if engine is fitted with low oillevel sensors or similar.could be interupting current from switch?anyway i think the clue is no lights.u need to buy the most usefull tool invented .its called a power probe(mines made by sealy)this tool connects to bat +and- and at the probe end it is swithchable from + to - and as such provides instant power or earth to test subject.anyway this tool will definatly pinpoint power dropout .tools universal to 12v systems so worth the investment.what used to take me a couple of hours to find brakes/shorts now takes mins or less.find out why the lights are not working its the same fault.

The solenoid is a high current relay which is energised by low current coming from the ignition switch so it could well be at fault. However to test it, connect 12v across the small terminals and you should hear a loud click if all is well.
