ford galaxy exhaust?

i have an n reg 2 litre petrol,ford galaxy , i have just replaced the down pipe and cat converter, there was a sensor in the old down pipe, but there is no hole for this on the new one, i have been told from garage that it is the correct down pipe, does the car need this sensor?

It certainly does need the lambda sensor that you mention - it measures the oxygen content of the exhaust gases and adjusts the fuelling accordingly.
