i presume the engine is a briggs 35 classic. if it splutters with a new plug, the next most likely cause is fuel. with these engines, a replacement diaphragm on the carb sorts this out. it is not an expensive item. inbetween the fuel tank and carburettor, you can see 5 screws holding the two items together. inbetween is this diaphragm and gasket which sometimes gets distorted. also dirt can clog the main fuel inlet pipe gauze which can be seen when the tank is removed from the carb. if doing this yourself take care when removing the carb you do not damage the governor springs.
