I have a 1994 Toyota Carina E. The speed sensor is broken. I have bought a new one from a Toyota dealer. The problem is I cannot remove old one. It is held onto the top of the gearbox by a long silver part. Is there a knack to getting it out. It just will not budge. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Thank You Claire, that was just the answer I was looking for.

Hi i've managed to remove the old speed sensor. You must first spray it with a lot of WD40. Then twist from side to side and finally pull upwards. It is very hard to budge at first but with the help of the WD40 and a lot of pulling it eventually came out and I was able to fit new speed sensor. Hope this helps somebody else.
