2000 1.2 fiat punto main coolant fan staying on?

when i turn on the egnition the coolint fan comes on and stayes on

The radiator fan is controlled by the engine ECU it sends an earth to the fan relay when the coolant temp reaches a set level, so it suggests that either the temp sensor is faulty or the relay has failed, my guess is the temp sensor.
