i have a 2000 chevrolet silverado my daughter inserted the wrong key into the ignition and messed up the security system and now icant start the vehicle

I had the same problem today when my hand slipped off the key as i was starting my 98 silverado 4x4, I just got off the phone with a GM mechanic and he told me to turn the key to the on position for 10 minutes to reset the security code. I haven't tried it yet but hope this helps.
