Could the timming belt be broken?

Hi i have a Renault scenic 1600 sport the car just lost power and stopped there was no unusual noise from the engine. When i try to start the engine there is a mechanical wizzing noise like something is turning but not engaging the engine.I have been told this could be a snapped timming belt could this be right.

sounds very much like timing belt is snapped, see if you can get to look inside the timing belt cover at the top of the engine while someone else briefly turns the engine over with the key,if the top pulley doesnt turn then the belt is the likely suspect,Paul
