How can I fix my Aqualisa Aquastream power shower?

I got an Aqualisa Aquastream power shower fitted three years ago. I believe it is out of production now but was produced from 1997 to 2003. It does not have a Boost button.

It has always made a bit of noise, however, in the last week or so it has become increasingly noisy – a really loud mechanical noise like there is something loose inside, maybe an impeller, or part of the pump/motor.

Is this something I can repair myself?

My Aqualisa Hydramax exposed will not supply water unless set to maximum cold.I have taken off the flexible hose and shower head from the wall and the same happens through the exposed copper supply pipe,so it is not a blocked hose/head.Many thanks.

Steve, January 2013
My problem is after 20 seconds or so the pump (not screeching) turns off and left with just the flow of gravity fed water.
I had another micro switch from my other (same model shower) and the problem is still there.
Any ideas?
Thanks

I had a screeching Aqualisa Aquastream power shower.

Looked on the website and decided to have a look at the cartridge myself. Followed instructions and fairly easy to remove.

Cartridge looked fine, no scale, so replaced.

Noticed that the actual hose from main unit to shower head was a little loose so tightened it up and 'hey presto' screeching gone!

So.... was it just removing and replacing the cartridge that solved the problem, or quite simply, tightening up the hose?? I didn't touch the pump!!

Wow, 4 days ago the water went off in my area and couldn't get the shower to work after that. I could hear the pump whirring but no water coming through. I just tried the entry above:
Let the pipe hang into the bath, turn temperature to cold get the pump on, then turn to hot. The water came out no problem so can only assume that there was an air bubble in it.
Thank you for your help on this.

Is there a certain way to fit a new cartridge? I have a very wet wall behind the tiles, assessor came in yesterday from insurance and said its the cartridge. I did fit one about two months ago, how would I know if it was leaking??? The wall could be wet from the previous one. Any advice much appreciated

Pete, March 2010
I have a 1997-2003 manual model. I replaced the pump about 18months ago due to excessive noise (not bad for around 7 years of use though) and just recently the microswitch (turns the pump on operated by a cam behind the control knob) has given up so the pump stays running after turning the water off (not good as the pump impellar needs water as lubricant) We have been switching on/off by wall switch externally without turning the water off on the shower unit so as not to damage the pump. The cartridge is also leaking.
I will replace the whole unit with the knew model Thermo but will replace the parts on the old one anyway which, with the near new pump, will give it a new lease of life.

Hi,

Suffering from what seems to be a common symptom ie screeching. Now the pump doesn't seem to switch off after use and needs the fuse removed to switch it off. Is it a simple task to remove and replace the pump, there goes my weekend.

Gary L, January 2010
thankyou very much, just had all new laura ashley tiles fitted and just fitted the shower back on, and there was no cold coming through the mixer. tried your answer and now it works perfectly. you have saved me pounds and pounds, once again thankyou very much

garry, October 2009
Not sure why you would need to put in a new thermo cartridge. I had the non-stopping problems listed below, but looked on their website (which is great): http://www.aqualisa.co.uk/parts-store/Controls/

To look at parts. Turned off power and water, Took out the cartridge, which is just a mechanical unit, descaled it, clean up the contacts beneath. Re-assembled and its good as new. - there was a lot of calcium depostis in there

My aqualisa aquastream has today started leaking from behind the on/off and temperature controls. Whats the part that I need, being a girlie I need the actual name of it please...

Jean, July 2009
You can still buy this shower and I think you can buy parts too. Look on the internet.

Linda Welsh, June 2009
Same thing has just happened to mine. I phoned my local STC Plumbing Center and have ordered a new pump (Quite easy to fit I have been told) They are good showers but the components just don't seem to last. Just a quickie for all you people who's showers are leaking you will need to buy a new cartridge which sits behind the on/off buton / temprateure controller. It is a sealed unit and you have to buy the whole thing, it's around £80 and takes about 1/2 hour to fit. I have replaced both of mine and this cured this problem on both.

Del Cooper, May 2009
I have a Aquastream not too sure what the model number is however don't think it is the latest model.
The only problem I am having is water leaking from the on/off knob and on closer inspection looks like the water is coming from the black surround holding the spindle. Might have a crap below the spindle not too sure but it doesn't look like it is coming from the spindle. Also the cold inlet pipe has condensation due to humidity and I would totally expect that if water is in the case. I get the dripping from the bottom of the shower and that is what I mentioned above but other than that it works well.
Where can I get the black part that hold all the spindle assembly?

Thanks

Richard, March 2009
I have had all of these problems over the last few years and have replaced my Aqualiser shower 3 times along with numerous wiring loom changes, now I can't use my shower because it is so loud, I'm sick of wasting my money on Aqualiser products and am having my shower replaced with an electric one, they never seem to break, nobody I know has had anything like these sort of problems with any other shower brand. Also the new shower will cover the extra hole in my tiles! In the long run, this is your cheapest option!!

Kevo., March 2009
I am having a temperature control problem with my Aquastream 96-03 model. It started leaking recently so we replaced the cartridge in it. All well and good except the temperature controls don't relate to the amount of water temp any more. Hottest is way over the last level to the right and where it used to be hot enough for a shower at 4/5 level, we now have to turn it up to 8. We know it's not the hot water cylinder as there is loads of hot water in it and we haven't changed any other settings apart from replacing the cartridge.

Is there any way of adjusting the knob so that the water temperature is hot enough at level 4/5?

Its interesting to read all of this. We have had three aqualisa aquastreams. When they perform properly they are superb showers. However, all three have lasted just outside the warranty, and we didn't get that nice assistant who suggested it might be repaired for free. Each time the problem has been the pump which screeches so badly that its uncomfortable to shower, and no one in our house is allowed to use it between 10pm and 7am as it wakes the whole house! even the replacement pump we bought for the first one lasted just over a year. On our latest shower, the power has now gone also (so has the screeching, though) and we are waiting till we can afford to replace the whole shower yet again! One assistant told me that there was a secret to prolonging the life of the pump, but he didnt tell me what the secret was! We continue to buy aqualisa partly because we like them, despite the expense and nuisance, and partly because a different style may leave holes from the old one exposed in the tiles - we wouldnt know until we tried to fit it. So, if anyone knows the secret to prolonging the pump life, please tell me!

Kim Prince, December 2008
Still got my shower (see my post back in 2005!!!) it still screeches every shower but only for a few seconds. On full power it is quite noisy, as if there isn't enough water getting to the unit but the pressure seems fine. If I turn down the power knob to 3/4 the noise stops and the motor hums nicely, just lose a little pressure.
As I bought it in 2004 I think it has done quite well to last this long so I think I'll live with it, unless Aqualisa want to fix it free under warranty LOL...(says I, waiting patiently for an answer!)

An answer to those who have had the problem that they can't turn the shower off.

I've had this problem with two Aquilisa power showers. The first one, installed approx 10 years ago, had the problem because moisture used to penetrate the housing and corrode contacts on a PCB fitted under the control knob. When this got bad enough it created a short circuit in the on/off part that had a mercury tilt switch. To solve the problem I had to regularly replace the PCB.
I replaced this shower 4 years ago with an Aquilisa Aquastream power shower that recently had the same problem, but this time it was being caused by a plastic arm that bears on two small leaf spring contacts that make the circuits for turning the shower on/off. One leaf contact is the initial speed, the second is the higher speed. The plastic arm slides forward in a recess (switch on) and returns back (switch off) when the rotary control knob is operated. My shower stopped switching off because this plastic arm was sticking in the recess it travels in. I believe this was because of a build-up of deposits due to moisture in the housing combining with other debris. (carbon powder from the motor brushes, perhaps). I eased out the arm and thouroughly cleaned and dried it and the recess it fits in, added a tiny coating of vaseline to the arm where it slides in the recess and replaced it. Result: shower turns off as it should do. A couple of comments. First, I used vaseline to lubricate the arm, this may not be a good idea as it may just attract a build up of deposits more quickly, so I'll keep an eye on that. Second, how do we stop moisture entering the housing, which I am sure is part of the problem. I was going to attach a photo of the plastic arm in position to this message, but I can't see a way of doing that in this forum. If anyone wants to see the photo reply to this message and I'll put it somewhere you can view it.

So what happened next?

I've just been on to Aqualisa and they have been most helpful. Seems the problem may be an airflow one. Here's what you do:

1. Unscrew the showerhead from the hose.
2. Let the hose hang into the bath.
3. set the temp to max cold.
4. turn shower on
5. Gradually increase the temp to max hot, stopping each time the flow splutters (this is the air escaping)
6 kEEP ON INCREASING GRADULALLY AND THEN LET IT RUN FOR 20SECS.
7. start doing the opposite down to max cold again.

that should do the trick - am off to do it myself.

Hazel, April 2008
No answer but we have exactly the same problem! Am disappointed that no one has replied to you so I'll pursue my query with Aqualisa myself.

Hazel, April 2008
Hi,
I have one of these and this morning the pump continued even though i turned the water off. In the end i had to pull the cord in the bathroom which shuts off power to the shower. Anyone heard of this before?
Thanks

cp76, April 2008
Its easy - all the instructions come with the new pump from Aqualisa. My shower had a leak on the on/off knob and was noisey, changed pumped it is great now. Aqualisa had pump to me next day

jerry, January 2008
Hey all,
I,ve identified the pump on the website 97 - 03,and now does anyone know the steps to removing the old one and replacing the new one?

Pete, December 2007
the aqualisa suffers from a brush problem on the motor. The brushes seem to wear in a semi circle around the motor so I managed to take out the motor gently took out the brushes filed them straight and the screeching disappeared. Now all I have is a drip from the bottom!!!

g.lee, November 2007
The screeching sound you hearing is a bearing problem which is a known fault with Aqualisa. I had the same thing last year and when i called, they knew exactly what the problem was... they sent an engineering out who again mentioned it was a very well known fault and replaced the bearings within 15 mins.

rishi shah, June 2007
Hello I am an aqualisa sales representative for Aqualisa in the rep of Ireland. Aquastream 91-96 (discontinued) Aquastream 96-03 all parts available. You have the manual single speed loom assembly model. (shower model no 829.40.20) A contact number you'll find on www.aqualisa.co.uk Aqualisa deal direct with the public so you will need to request a new pump for the model number I quoted above. You will also need a credit card. All the best Joe McDermott. MT Agencies Ireland.

My aqualisa power shower has started leaking through the on off nob. It is also fairly noisy when in operation, but it has been like this since I moved into the house and still works well.

If anyone has any ideas on the leak, or advice on how to open it up, that would be great.

Ben

Ben Boxall, March 2007
you know how to get rid of the screeching - (get a new motor/pump)
you cant fix the pumps so the only way is to replace it

mine did the noise thing and now its running fine again

dave, February 2007
Called the Aqualisa engineer out yesterday (Aqualisa's number is on their website). The guy on the phone was really helpful and suggested that even though our shower was slightly outside the warranty period they might fix it for nothing. Sure enough, engineer came, swapped out the microswitch and wiring loom (approx. 15 minutes) and presto, all is fine again. However, we didn't get the screeching sounds you others got, so yours might be the pump itself. Aqualisa are excellent at customer service - the engineer didn't even want to see my proof of purchase or to sign anything afterwards. Best of luck guys.

John Clifton, September 2005
Hi,
I have one as well. Great shower but lately it has started to screech. It will work fine for a few minutes then the screeching starts. very high pitched and very load. It sounds like a bearing. It will suddenly stop and continue to work fine.
Then intermittent screeching. Doesn't happen every shower but most. It started in the summer as the cold water warmed up there was no need to have the thermostat on around 4 or 5 to get a nice shower temp. It was turned down to 1 or 2 and that is when the screeching started. Confused. Bearings or valves? It may bear a reseblence to your problems.

Chris Rothwell, August 2005
Hi Tim,

I had a similar problem until mine packed up completely. I can't get it working at all. We suffer from hard water. I opened it up, expecting to find it caked in limescale, but it was clean as a whistle (just the outer casing showing stains). I can't see anything wrong with the obvious (connections etc.) so am on the point of giving up but very frustrated.
Anyone else any ideas about these things?
