my 1998 ford transit diesel van is very under powered?

i have a 2.5 diesel 1998 ford transit van which is very under powered it will not rev out in each gear and dies at even a slight upwards gradient in the road, i know these vans aren't fast but i could probably get out and run faster uphill, if you could help i would be most grateful.

hi no answer to your problem, but i have the same trouble with my treg 2.5 banana engine, have replaced all the filters, replaced the injectors and just replaced the diesel pump and is still the same,ie top speed 40 mph and won,t go up hills.now the van starts ok and will tick over fine but has no torque or power and won,t rev up. 4 mechanics later still problem persists i think im going to scrap it now through pure frustration. This is my 4th transit and never had this problem before. update just spoke to guy about van and he said could be the exhaust might have coliapsed in side 1 of the boxes and stopping flow,i will check this 1st thing in the morning.

i had same problem. on the fuel pickup pipe in the tank there isa small ball bearing in it what can get blocked restricting fuel i took it out and problem solved

had same problem i think ,it was a little plastic disc on pump that broke up bosch do a replacment that cured it

sum times after getting a cam belt fitted you have to advance the pump just a we bit 3mm it makes a big difference but if the engine starts to make a heavy knocking noise (pinking) put it back

is it firing on all cylinders? open the nuts on top of injectors, engine tone should change instantly, if it does't injector is faulty.
is air filter clean
is exhaut pipe good
check fuel filter
also take fuel inlet pipe off back of injector pump make sure gauze filter is not blocked.

good luck had the same problem myself -- I got replacement 2nd hand injectors off e-bay for about £25.00 set of 4 new they are about £80 each

also make sure air cleaner is not blocked and exhaust clear and not partially blocked.

thanks very much for answering the question about the 2.5 diesel engine caine

id narrow it down to fuel delivery problem or injection pump settings.cheapest first:renew fuel filter and while ur at it check for damaged delivery lines under van and blocked vents on filler cap.check injection pump timeing with a dial guage dont trust the marks and cam belt alignment, check the tappet clearances while ur in there.if these fail and assuming no unusual smoke ,then its down to injection pump govener adjusment.not for the inexperienced.
