how can I get a laptop to recognise a new hard drive?

I've a couple of laptops needing hard drives but when I install them the laptop does not recognise them, I've thought about bios but there is no foppy drive to reflash - do I need an external floppy. they're compaq presarrios .I've disabled the protection in the bios and re-enabled nothing seems to work. cheers clark

I'm struggling to remember, but I have come across this before.

I remember changing a harddisk and the computer not recognising it. Somewhere (I think it was via My Computer > Manage) I entered or deleted an ID number. Once this was done the computer saw the new drive.

Hope this helps a little.
