Mountfield M1 Popular starting problems?

Hi, this I have been given. I can start it, it revs up well then stalls. This happens on every pull. I've noticed a small copper wire, in black insulation, which comes out from under the top shrouding by the carb. It isn't connected to anything, but if I connect it to nearby bare metal then the machine won't fire at all. Can anyone help, please?....I'm wondering where this wire should connect to, as I think it might be the problem?

The wire is the kill wire. This needs to be grounded to kill the engine - as it is, if you do ever get it started, you won't be able to switch it off!

Usually, this wire connects to the throttle lever assembly, and is grounded when the control is moved to the 'STOP' position, or it is connected to a flywheel brake assembly that kills the engine when the operator lets go the handle.

The start then dies problem indicates a carburettor overhaul is needed. Fuel supply problem
