tough one.probably would have went same way.suspect suspension top mount/bearing.drown shock mount under bonnet inner wing where bolts come thru with wd40 while rotating steering l-r.do same under wheel arch at top of coil spring.test car.no joy,do same to anti roll bar rubber mounts and so on .systematic aproach of all mountings to try and affect a change in knock quality.,not a cure ,a change.when detected u have found source.tracked 1 down once to a worn bolt holding the wishbone bush to chassis tiny ridge on the shank sounded like the side of the car was falling off.noise out of all proportion to size.oil lubricates temporerally.changes sound.takes time to find .diy costs little
