why does my air con smell?

when the aircon is used it sometimes smells damp and fousty and causes the windscreen to mist up

They have to be recharged every couple of years,some service garages are offering cheap deals at the moment(about £45.00 but don't quote me on that) try Quik Fit,Charlie Browns etc.
