How can i fix freeplay in steering on a renault clio 1.4 automatic?

Have a renault clio 1.4 automatic that has just failed mot on freeplay in steering.can anyone tell me if this is easy to fix myself and will i have to buy a new steering column?

lift rubber up from between brake and clutch pedal and slide up column shaft you will see a loose shaft to uj joint we just weld them to elimenate free play or fill with araldite rapid and leave overnight to set hope this helps
