lost internet connection, IP address is there but no inbound or outbound?

I was watching a movie on my computer and all of a sudden my external hd became corrupt.
I have lost internet connection on one computer but not the other. They are both connected through a network on a router. The IP address is there but I can not repair or do anything. I can not open up any web page. I have used fix blast by Symantec, I have used McAfee, Pest Patrol, Hijackthis. I have searched manually in the registry for malicious spyware and nothing. Now I ran ipconfig fix, and it is unable to fix it. I really do not want to reinstall windows, I would like to resolve the problem if I can.

I'm having a similar problem. I deleted several programs that I thought were not in use (not my internet driver) & now my system (windows xp) does not recognize my IP signal although I know it is there because I can hook up a laptop and the internet works just fine. I'm stuck. Earthlink tech help could not help, we tried their normal routine but nothing worked.

i am having a very similar problem. i have two laptops, 1 with vista, and 1 with xp home. i am using a cable modem, with no router (i'm a cheap ass). i recently tried to set up an ad-hoc network, so that i can share internet connection between the two. my problem is after making a few suggested changes to initiate the network (using the laptop with xp as the wired computer) i can't get internet connection anymore to even ATTEMPT to set up my ad-hoc correctly. this sucks extra bad as i am more of a stoner than a computer tech. i have disabled the firewall, and tried to create a new connection. i've also tried to repair the existing connection to no avail.it keeps saying that it cannot renew the ip address, and to contact the person that runs my network. unfortionatly I AM the person that manages my network. i guess i'm going to try and reset the modem and see if that helps. any ideas? i'm about ready to format the whole damn thing, and load an xp upgrade pack i bought a while back.

Exactly the same thing.
Aparently this started around July on one of my PC's that I normally don't use.
But according to the error log it hapened around July 16 (whatever, not exactly important).
I have seen this in the past and it was caused by a malware/virus writting to my hosts file.
Not this time.
I have been digging at this for a week so far not resolved.
any suggestions from any one would be good.
Run them all nothing found.

I agree, try cable first, if that makes no difference unplug cable and delete network connection under Network Connections in the control panel. Plug in Cable and it should re configure a fresh connection. Also try ipconfig /renew.

Hope it helps.
