it revs up and down on its own and has a dead spot when i try and rev it or take off

Hi Deano, sounds like you have a few faults there!! the erratic idle:- check for split hoses on the inlet system and the idle valve might need cleaning. The "flat spot" might be either the throttle position sensor or the air flow sensor, the latter is the most likely, mounted between the air filter box and the throttle valve unit.
