How can i fix my vauxhall vectra 1.8 GLS. 1996 (P)?

Engine cuts out when braking to stop. Also warning light has started to appear (yellow engine light).

Possibly the idle control valve, which is located on top of the engine (if my memory serves me right). It has a large-bore air hose going to it (3/4" approx). They can be dismantled and cleaned.
