Can my Tigerloop fail?

I've a tigerloop fitted to my oil supply(tank lower than boiler) been in for approx. 5 years. Never had a problem with it plumber tells me my tigerloop is knackered causing boiler to lock out. Is this true? How can you test them for soundness?its not leaking. Any comments much appreciated thanks

How about the bottom portion (the spin on filter which is on a threaded SS rod) just falling off the top unit (appears to be aluminum pot metal assembly)? The unit appears to show metallurgical failure?

My tigerloop keeps letting oil out somehow and i keep having to purge it, i cannot see any leaks, does anyone know why it does this.

I have just had my tigerloop replaced with a lot of grit in it (white not black) that had been sucked up by the boiler. However the bottom of the tank looks clear? Anybody any ideas?

It can fail - mine did catastrophically during the recent cold spell which caused the heating to fail. This resulted in a burst in the loft which flooded the bungalow & we're now facing new ceilings, new floors & some new partition walls. It'll be about 3 months before we're back in & highlights a number of points. 1. Don't just have your boiler serviced - check the whole system. 2. If you go away for a period during freezing weather establish a backup - I shall use a thermostatically controlled electric heater. 3. Ensure you have proper insurance - fortunately we have.

I find mine generally reliable however because it is situated outside , during an icy spell of weather ice formed on top of the unit stopping air entering causing an air lock and therefore no fuel to the boiler

WHY PAY A PROFFESSIONAL AND THEN NOT TAKE HIS ADVICE? AFTER ALL IF HE TURNS OUT TO BE WRONG YOU DON'T PAY HIS BILL

Yes they can fail, but the more common cause is the oil line fittings becoming loose (usually damaged) and so sucking in air instead or drawing up the oil. Check ALL joints throughout the oil line from the tank to the boiler, it only needs to be slightly loose and the whole system fails. Also check oil filters and strainers for blockages.

Yes, they can fail, they have a non return valve inside which can break by either blocking or falling to bits, I have replaced many in my time. for replacing, expect a bill of about £100.
The way to check is to have someone at the boiler, reseting the lock out and someone looking at the tigerloop to see if fuel is present and if so, is it moving about? If no fuel is present, and the oil level in the tank is above the tigerloop, its either screwed or the oil filters blocked. If you cant see inside the tigerloop and UV rays attack the plastic, i'd have a new one anyway as its a matter of time until it cracks and leaks.
