How can I fix the bearings on a Hotpoint 9934 washer/dryer?

I have an OLD Hotpoint washer dryer 1000 de luxe 9934 and I suspect the bearings at the rear have gone due to the herrendous noise when spinning and the rusty brown stain at the back of the drum and floor.

Can anyone tell me if it is worth fixing, the cost for bits and how long/what tools will be required. I know I am asking alot but although I know nothing about DIY fixing washing machines, I am mechanically minded and have the time and patience to hopefully tackle this if it is worth it. I am going touring in 2 years time and would rather not have to buy a new one.

Many Thanks

Colin Kennedy.

I've exactly the same problem you describe. The brown liquid and the terrible noise. If it was not for the brown liquid I'd have dismissed the bearings as they seem to run fine at low rpm. I've tried to get to the bearings from the rear of the machine (locknut and pulley both off ) but I can't seem to get the drum out. What was the outcome of your attempt?
