my pilot light will not stay on?

my pilot light will not stay on . it goes out as my finger leaves the switch

if your pilot light goes out straight away your problem is most definately the thermocouple. it could be out of position (ie not in the flame) or just naffed, check its position first. a new one should cost about 8 - 10 quid. try to get original manufacturers one as some generic thermocouples can last as long as a candle in a hurricane.

Prob the thermocouple (brown metal thin pipe that goes from gas valve to flame). Just disconnect ( it has no gas or anything inside don't worry) take it to plumbers merchant & get another for a few pounds. If that does not work then its the gas valve i am afraid (£40-£100 + gas engineer to fit )
