Whats the cause of a broken intake push rod on a Craftsman model 311707 with a 17.5hp engine? Ran fine when it was shut off. Upon restart a few days later, it ran rough, but ran. Started it up a few days after that and it just stopped after a couple seconds. Can I get away with just changing the push rod and adjusting the valve or is it something a little deeper?

id replace the valve and spring on the chance that it was the cause,or was damaged.
