Have done this job recently and would like to add that the gearbox has to be drawn back to allow the sump to be removed. The shim plate between the engine block and the gearbox stops the sump from dropping away.

If this is the mk 2 (bubble type) the job can be done with the engine in the car, but the sump has to come off, together with the side covers on the engine timing side. Its very labour intensive, but not really that difficult - but not really to be attempted if you are a beginner. The repair kit comes complete with chain and sprockets - they are probably available at motor factors by now.
