How can I fix my L reg rover 214?

When turning the key I can hear the starter motor trying but the engine doesn't start. I've had suggestions that it's the flywheel and to rock the car to correct it or maybe the timing belt but how can I tell and is it expensive to fix??

take a sparkplug out, put it in the ht lead and lean it on bare metal on the engine, put your finger over the plug hole and get someone to turn the car over.
this answers 3 questions, do 1 have a spark, do i have compresion, and a wet/ petrol smelling finger says you have fuel.
if you have compresion ie you could feel pressure on your finger your timing belt is ok, in no comp it may have snapped, and it is likely to cost around £250.
