Rover metro overheating?

I only have to drive about 2 miles and my metro overheats. The gauge goes off the clock and steam hisses out of the filler cap. I,ve changed the thermostat and also the filler cap, there doesn't appear to be any leaks and I don't lose any water [apart from what steams out of the cap]. One other clue, although the engine is red hot the heater blows out cold air!
Any ideas? Dek

Air locks in the system or water pump (or possibly a head gaskett). You will need to find a way of getting rid of the air locks. Some engines have air bleeds in them, if yours has one remove it and fill the coolant bottle until water runs out, then replace the bleed. If you dont have a bleed find a sensor near the top of the engine in the cooling system and follow the instructions above. If no air comes out then remove and inspect the water pump. If all is ok with the water pump suspect a blown head gaskett.
