steering lock jammed on 2001 vauxhall astra 1.6 Sxi?

how can you release a jammed steering lock on a 2001 vauxhall astra Sxi 1.6 litre petrol

This is quite a common problem with this model, even more so in hot weather for some reason.
Try shocking the key and turning it, known as "Bumping", you may just get the key to turn, as I remember you just need to replace the barrel, coded to your existing key.

Hi
Sounds like the ignition barrel has gone or is going. Try putting pressure on top of the steering wheel and rocking it whilst trying to turn the key. If that works do not take the key out or put the steering lock back on, but get it to a dealer with your key code for a new barrel as its sure to go again at some point.
