Serv Light On dashboard?

Hi can someone help, my serv light comes on my dashboard but only that light no other, some say it is due for a service others say it needs to be plugged into the computer for fault diagnostic, I phoned a Renault dealer they said probably needs a service but i need to take in to find out ??

Took It to Renault and they said If the "serv" light comes on by Itself then It Is just that the car needs a service or the "serv" light has'nt been reset by the garage who serviced the car It's only if the light comes on with another light then it needs to be diagnosed !!

Thx Nigel,
Phoned my local Renault dealer £88 Just for the Diagnostic check (Refunded off the final bill if I Get work carried out there)But my local Garage does it for £30.
Would you use the local Garage ?? Because I'm worried that they would find a fault and say I would have to take to renault to get done.

Hi, sounds like you need to get it connected to a diagnostic code reader, most independant garages and tyre & exhaust places have the kit to do this, it would be better if they can connect to the car then drive it and when the light comes on they can "freeze" the info and see what is causing the fault light

Thx for the reply.
The car is a x reg 2000 it's no digital display only mileage and distance stuff is digital.
The weird thing is that it does'nt come on on a warm day.

how do i turn it off on a Mercedes aclass 160

Hi, if it's the "serv" light below the speedo it is the engine fault light and need a diagnostic readout, if it's in the digital display it could be the oil level is low, it all depends on the model & year.
