Seems like an old forum but no reason not to give thanks to 'Big Tone'. With the help of other folk on the webbynet I managed to establish that the thermostat was bust. I noted where the wires went before removing the old thermostat but the connections weren't quite the same on the new one. This answer prompted me to look (very) closely and spot the inexplicably vague numbers on both thermostats and match them up. Fridge runs like a dream now and all for the princely sum of about 25 quid. Thanks again Big Tone.

can't remember were the wires went on this thermostat , there's two pugs on the end one witha resistor , and then a mount on the body , red black green wires , when i put the black and red one's on the end mounts , the fridge stay's on constant and bypasses the thermo ??????????????????

Thanks Big Tone, that answers all my questions

Assuming you know which wire is your live supply, normally the brown, that will go on (6)
One of the black wires will be your return feed to the compressor (4)
The other black wire will be for the light, you should find it connecting to the light switch (3)
BEWARE SOME MANUFACTURERS REVERSE THE WIRE COLOUR CONFIGURATION. DO NOT MESS WITH THE POWER CONNECTED, ESTABLISH POWER SUPPLY WITH A VOLTAGE METER.

thanks for reply
My stat is a RANCO type and the terminals are numbered 4-6-3 with 6 in the middle. Which wire should be connected to which. It is an under the work top model without a defrost heater but with an interior light.

the wires to your stat assuming you have larder or wet wall fridge, require a live feed to the stat and a return feed to the motor on tempreture rise.
the extra wire will feed your interior light and or a defrost heater if fitted.
