Many thanks for the advice wirecutterman.
I had a problem with brown deposits on clothes after washing.
I first thought it was a hard water issue, but the brown stuff was too gunky.
Running hot cycles with washing soda or using proprietary machine cleaners did not fix it.
After seeing your post I took the bottom back panel off the machine and found the black tube and clips as described.
I agree the clips are awkward, but a Mole wrench holds the ends compressed, though the smaller clip at the pump end is still tricky when refitting.
I would advise taking the whole tube off and cleaning it out, since I found gunk had got past the filter.
Also, stick a finger up the opening into the drum and wiggle out any stuff still caught up there.
Apart from coins and toothpicks, I took out loads of brown gloop from drum, filter and tube - all the same looking as the stuff that had ended up on my washing.
I just ran a hot wash with soda again, having left the panel off. I checked the filter and all now seems squeaky clean.
Now for the next real wash load.
