Ford Ka replacement key?

I have a 98 Ford Ka and have just bought a new key for it as the old old was not working continuously. The old key is a black key with a red chip on the top corner. The new key is the same , black with a red chip on the top corner. The new key works in the door locks but I need to programme it for the ignition and do not have access to the sequence for setting up a new key. Can you help as the local Ford dealer says his computer is down and wont be back for a week.

you should only need one key if you have the red key and two keys if they are blue.

Cant remeber the exact way to do it but try turning the ignition on and off 10 times until it bleeps (with red key) and then put in your new key (blue key) and turn the ignition on and off and then it should program the blue key. wait 20 seconds before trying to start the car

this can only be programmed with a ford dealer.he has to clear the pats memory(passive anti theft)chip in keys).then he can programme them.you must have two keys for the system to work.the ford garage uses a computer called (ids).the labour charge is about one hour.hope this is of use to you.
