engine light on dash on ford fiesta zetec?

On the off chance that there are any nice people out there that have a clue about cars, i would really appreciate your help. The engine light on my ford fiesta zetec has come on again. It was switched off by a garage which said it had to do with the emmision. they never gave a error code. i did the test on the dashboard and it flashes none Dtc. Does anyone know if this test is the same than the one where they hook it up to some sort of computer? the car runs fine, butI noticed that it gets really hot at the passengers foot compartment. maybe thats normal. i also noticed doing the dashboard test that when it says gage, the fuel one goes all the way up but the other dials don't budge, could they be stuck???? it works fine when driving. please please help!!!!!

how much should a ford garage charge to diagnose and repair sensor on engine light on dash coming on

my ford garage is charging 70£ for diagnostics to see why my engine light is coming on on my fiesta zetec - 5 yrs old - is this reasonable ?

My dials all go to max and then back to min when I do a test. I know this diesn't help but at least you now know that they should.

thanks for your reply. It makes sense about a live data sensor test. Unfortunately it will be hard to find someone who knows what they are doing, as even Ford themself did not fix the problem. Any idea about the dials? should they be moving at the gauge test?

There are two kinds of tests.Stored fault codes(the kind your garage cleared)dash test(none detected). And live feed tests.quite possible for stored codes to be ,well, not wrong but not complete.for eg,maybe your fault is only apparent when engine is half hot and driving at 60mph.my point is diagnostics is high end stuff, maybe 2 in 10 mechanics capable of it(dont include mself)Just clearing the fault codes will only work until the fault appears again.I'm afraid you need to find a competant diagnostic technician.capable of preforming live data sensor tests. If you do any imformation as to running conditions helps them.be precise,be accurate. The best techs are worth their weight in gold and dont come cheap.sorry I cant be more help.ps equipment to run these tests can cost several thousands.
