Acer Notebook cracked screen?

For apparently no reason ( not dropped or banged) the screen on my Acer Laptop has cracked. Has this happened to anyone else, and has anyone any idea hoe much it will cost to get repaired. If you know somewhere local to the Midlands to get it repaired would also be gratfully appreciated. Even though it's still under warrenty, I'm sure Acer will not be interested.

I just got given my first Acer laptop! Came with cracks across the screen! From one I used to use I know that laptops get hot during use. My other one I had was a Compaq. My other one is a Dell! When you shut it is it the heat rising up cracking the screen? I know Dell and Compaq does not have that problem! They are made different from this Acer though!

Edward Cook, March 2016
I have the same problem. Acer wants $300 to fix it. My computer has never been moved from my desk. I open it one day and there is a huge crack in the bottom left of the screen. I'm pretty upset about it. I wish I had chose another brand instead, because this is ridiculous.

Nicci, December 2014
Acer ASpire-15.6 inch V5-571 series.purchased apr.2013 and upon closing as usual the other night the screen cracked from bottom left corner up and across the middle and down to the bottom right corner.nobody at future shop mentioned cracked screens were not under warranty but I could purchase one to cover it if it did happen.had they said that I would NOT have bought it at all. acer wants 250.00 to fix or I can call some numbers of techs who can fix it. there was no abuse of this unit at all. acer says it was 'accidental' damage and not covered. NO accident at all! Just close the lid with NO pressure and a huge crack! does anyone have any more news about this problem.I am in the Toronto area...

cw, December 2013
I got mine for my birthday & it was purchased July 29th & middle of September mine ended up with black splotch on it that spread. It has never been dropped or mishandled. Walmart doesn't warranty after 15 days. Called Acer & I paid to have it shipped to them & once they got it, they called me said it was cracked screen on inside. I don't see how when all it did was sit on my desk & I would just open & close it. Anyway, they wouldn't cover & their cost to fix was $5 cheaper than the total that was paid to purchase at WalMart. Acer is a big ripoff!!! Shotty products. Will never buy again & even WalMart people in electronics said that they were not going to sell them anymore due to shotty product.

Brenda Hammonds, November 2013
So just bought my daughter an a new Acer at Bestbuy, I had the laptop on my office desktop with the other three working away adding virus protection and Office to her laptop and heard a pop and it now leaks, Acer and Best buy both claim damage, maybe the hard drive spins to fast :). Acer which is funny as you where leading at the company I work for, now you will not be short listed. This will be my last laptop purchase from you.. and Best Buy shame on you for not sticking up for your customers..

Ian Godfrey, August 2013
I'm on the second screen replacement for the acer laptop I bought from costco. No one will take any responsibility. These screens break mysteriously. The second one to "crack" shows no physical signs of damage. I will never buy another Acer again. There is a law firm looking into this...

artist mom, March 2013
same. exact. problem. i got my acer chromebook for christmas, (so about 2 months ago) and i set it on my bed for 2 minutes, came back, opened my laptop and it was cracked on top with thick black spots, rainbow lines, and a whole rectangular shaped grey area on the corner of my screen. ive never dropped or did any harm to this laptop at all. it was simply laying on my bed when all of this happened. does anyone know cheap repair?

dani, February 2013
i have an acer aspire 6935g screen cracked with rainbow lines. this laptop sits on a table and never moves, never been dropped or abused ..l

Mrs Wallace, February 2013
i know if you google it you can find pretty descent prices for a replacement screen. ive seen them as low as $35. if you or a friend know how replace the screen yourself it would be alot cheaper!

heather, January 2013
same exact thing happened to me. i went to open my screen and heard a popping sound and then the screen had lines and black and white and grey colors all through it. im guessing my thumb touching the screen ruined it forever! ive only had it for a couple months. guess i shouldnt have opened it!! ACER SUCKS!!

heather, January 2013
same here Acer Aspire TimelineX 3830TG-6412, just using for 2 months, no physical crack on glass surface, but crack of black ink in under the glass. Those crack just show up after I reboot.

Peter Chiu, November 2012
Same thing happened with my acer. Used it this morning before school, tried to use it when i got home at the screen was cracked! Its not even a month old yet, and i am very upset, now i have to get it fixed!!

Kylee Johnson, September 2012
Same here havent had it but a couple of months. One minute it was fine next time i turned it on it was cracked or looks like screen is cracked.

Tara, September 2012
I tried gluing the cracked hinges with epoxy. It helped for
a little while and then broke again. I don't know why the
hinges are so stiff.

novice repairman, October 2011
hiya, same things happened to my acer laptop, just heard two clicking sounds then black lines appeared, ive only had it a few months, its still under warranty but acer are refusing to repair it saying its accidentle damage, when it isent. Its disgusting im trying to fight this with acer at moment.

Dawn, September 2011
Mine too. Bought it used approximately two months after original owner's purchase.

This is ridiculous.

l;zsgyudofgh, July 2011
Hi the same thing has just happened to my daughters acer happy laptop just 3 months old...she was sitting at the table using it , she closed it 5 mins later opened it turned it on a black and white screen with thick black line across it...i now have one very upset daughter worried sick she broke it...£250.00 down the drain by the sounds of it..Which is a lot of money for a hard working single parent..i calling acer tomorrow to see what they say....will update when i have called them.

karen, March 2011
Yes the screen looks like it has a crack inside and its only 6 weeks old

lynn, February 2011
My husband's aspire notebook is cracked near both hinges, left side is completely off hinge. Luckily it hasn't affected the screen but don't know how long before the whole thing is disconnected.

Lois, October 2010
Yes my daughters, within 2 months of purchase also...also not dropped or treated roughly...she bought it herself out of her after school job and she's very fussy and looks after her stuff.

I think it's a fault of their design as far as I can see.
The screen and casing is not rigid...and possibly the hinge is too tight... it flexes/bends when you open it up especially from the corners...which is how you get to use them...you can't get to use them if they stay closed...screens don't like it when you flex them...what do you know they crack...one of the consequences of "thin-ness"

In NSW, Australia we have a department of Fair Trading which we contacted and here at least they cannot ask for money to fix something under warranty before even looking at it.
We take it back today to be sent back...but not before taking extensive photos of the body to show not a scratch of any kind...lest there be one after we send it to be repaired.

Tony Wheeldon, October 2010
exactly the same problem here, got a acer 5732z just closed it to get my headphones, plugged them in and opened it again and screen is cracked , nothing but white splodges and coloured lines now. Hubby says acer wont touch it unless it is a software issue - speaking from past experience. have plugged in monitor but that does not solved the cracked screen issue

angi, August 2010
same thing happened to my son within 2 months of owning it. Was quoted $189 to have acer fix it while it still under warrenty. I refused. so now i am seeing everyone has had a problem. found websites where u can fix it yourself checking into that until a class action lawsuit is filed. anyone hear of any.

sam, August 2010
Yes it has. The laptop was fine one day and the following day it had a huge spider's web crack leading from the bottom right hand corner. It has always been kept in a good quality sleeve on my desk there is no way it was my fault. My friend had the exact same problem. I rang acer and they quoted me £68 if it was found to be my fault, then I got the bill quoting me £105 and then acer said they had initially quoted me £54 which was anothe figure all together!

Hazel Harrison, July 2010
I had similar problems with the Acer Notebook. I opened it to find it showing a spider web of cracks on the screen. The notebook was not dropped or damaged in any way.

I attached a monitor to the screen and am able to use the computer. It does not solve the problem with the cracked monitor but it the other monitor allows me to use the computer.

Cousy the Jack Russell, July 2010
I have just contacted Watchdog about this matter. PLEASE, PLEASE would you all now do the same, the more emails they get, the more chance there is of something happening.
Here is the email address for Watchdog

Thanks

Same old, same old. It seems that Acer are not a very reliable company at all. The exact same thing happened to my daughter aspire laptop, we sent it off to them, then we were told that it would cost £90 to repair, the laptop only cost us £199. Then they said that they would return it to us broken, for £50.

I have been in touch with Acer and they said that "AGAIN" it must have been dropped or the screen hit with a force, but it was not.

I hope that anyone thinking of getting anything from Acer read these posts first.

steve woods, July 2010
I purchased an acer aspire notebook for my son 2 months ago. He was working at his desk and closed the notebook to go for dinner. When he returned he opened the notebook and the screen went blank. He switched it off and then powered it up again and there was a black mark in the middle of the screen that has now leaked all over the screen. Currys stated there was an internal crack on the screen and the damage was intentional. How can opening and closing a screen be intentional damage? I think it is time we all went to Which magazine or Watchdog. It is time for a co-ordinated campaign.

Brendan mccourt, June 2010
same thing has happend to me. My Acer is only 3 mths old, the kids placed it on a table to wait for the updates to load, it was then packed away. Came back after a foreign holiday, opened the machine to find 3 big white blobs and a load of pixels. Blamed the kids!!! Think i might owe them an apology. I phoned Comet and they basically told me it was a common problem but would have to claim on house insurance, as Acer would not accept it was a design problem.
Has anyone had any luck? I'm off to inform Watchdog as the customer care is beyond a joke.

Jess's mum, June 2010
got an acer 5732z which is a few months old and a crack developed on the right hand side from the hinge to the top right corner. I believe the frame is not rebust to manage the lid function over a period of time. I have not dropped the laptop nor slamed the lid etc. I know for certain that the screen was ok when I closed the lid and the next day a big crack. As its under waranty I sent it to Acer, who replied that the damage was mechanical caused by misuse. I am so wound-up of this matter that I will send it to an Engineering Institute for analysis of wear. Acer want £120 to fix it! I am not going to spend another penny on Acer!

Anon, June 2010
I too have an Acer Travelmate 7720 laptop just two years old. I have noticed and watched as two cracks, located at the outer hinge tabs getting longer around the hinges. My contact with Acer simply stated "out of warranty, send laptop and $199 for repair" so I have asked them to sell me a new top and I will have it installed. Waiting for a reply.

F Bradley, May 2010
same problem, my daughters acer 5332 laptop screen cracked at the bottom right hand side, from the inside edge of the hinge. I complained like hell to acer and tesco, as she shut the lid, went to bed, opened it he following morning to find the crack. Acer say it was either dropped or the lid was "closed to hard" all a load of bull and they know it. This is a design fault and the screen and lid are too thin. I asked for the cracked screen to be returned to me and they refused. I am know going to the small claims court.

muuza, May 2010
I purchased an Acer Notebook laptop in May 2009. It was treated carefully and stayed on my desk. I opened it one afternoon only to find that the screen was cracked. Acer is trying to tell me that I must have dropped it, even though I know that this is not the case! They want to charge me $329.00 to fix it. I am not happy with Acers customer service. I have tried to explain what happened, but they are not interested. I know that the laptop was not dropped or treated roughtly. There are no marks or scratches on the laptop. I'm sending all this information to Fair Trading and are hopeing that they can sort this out for me.

David from Australia, May 2010
yes my acer laptop screen cracked for no apparent reason. just out of the blue. had not been damaged in any way. repaired by a local specialist for £150. currently trying to get refund from P C World. only just out of guarantee. PCW being obstructive.

TJB, April 2010
Same happend to me. For apparently no reason, the lid again to find a big nasty crack right down. i both from 12 january 2010. and apears many lines: blue, reds, greens..

mahu, April 2010
Correction to my Fix for broken lid/screen. I used 3mm (not 2mm) clear plastic. Worth noting this as it will be more rigid and therfore stronger. You are best finding a local plastic sheeting specialist who will let you have some end cuts as you only need a small amount. This material can be cut with a medium size hack saw and a file for the edges. I also used a grinding disc with a electric drill to trim the edges.

Ron Brown, March 2010
Acer did replace my cracked Screen/Lid but it has gone again and is now well out of the warranty period. I have repaired this myself (Not a pretty way but it fixes it) I cut two 2mm thick clear plastic into one and a half inch X three quarters of an inch strips. After softening the plastic over a gas hob burner I bent these to fit the shape of this part of the lid and glued with Loctite Super Glue. FIXED! - Good luck with yours.

Ron Brown, March 2010
My daughter just purchased an Acer Aspire 5532, had it for 8 days. Turned it on and the screen had black blotches and lines. Tried to return it to Best Buy and they claim screen was cracked and it couldn't be returned and if I wanted it exchanged that I should give them $179 for a service plan. The laptop wasn't dropped or banged, in fact, it was hardly used. From what I've read here, it sounds like a defect in the product and possible class action suit.

Rae, March 2010
I have had the same problem..I used my laptop and turned it off. Five minutes later powered it back up and had vertical color lines and black splotches on the right side of the screen. I shipped it back to Acer and they received it and said that I cracked the screen. They told me that it would cost $199 to replace. I have filed a complaint with BBB. I have only had my laptop for two months. I tell ya this is just nuts!! I feel that these laptops are defective and Acer should stand behind their products..

Briana, March 2010
Well pc world and acer will take no responsiblity for the screen having black thumb like marks in bottom right hand corner, a 2cm white block , rainbow striped lines , all over and either grey or a black blue colour block the rest of screen and can't see a thing, 1st they said it was accidental damage, then it is cosmetic, then they said they don't cover software, ha ha now its impact damage. Pc world and acer are full of bull. A £500 laptop that lasts only 5 months. They don't deserve custom. Take them to court like i am and put your cost's down. They are not reasonable and need teaching a lesson.

Chris09092009, March 2010
I too have an acer travelmate laptop and have noticed cracks getting deeper around the hinges. Anyone have any ideas as to how to get it fixed?

Miss P., March 2010
Mine broke too when I picked it up, there is a big vertical line down the middle of the screen. I will take this back to the retailer I purchased it from and get it repaired that way, thanks for all of the other answers. I thought it was weird the screen broke for no apparent reason.

David, March 2010
hi guys this sucks just bought my acer used 3 weeks and right in the middle the screen cracked acer should be liable no one has touched this laptop but me and i touch it like its priceless!

Crystal Burkett, February 2010
I purchased an Acer Travelmate 7720 from PC World Business(PCWB). I too have a cracked case by the left hand hinge. Now worried that the cracked screen is the next thing about to happen.

The laptop sits on my desk and is rarely moved. All I do is open and shut the lid. The laptop works fine and I have been very happy until now.

PCWB refer me back to Acer as they say they only offer manufacturers warranty. Acer say the warranty has expired.

Consumer Direct say that PCWB have an exemption under the Unfair Terms Act 1977. If you buy as a business customer you are then excluded from protection under the Sale of Goods Act 1997.

I have now read the terms and conditions on the back of the PCWB invoice( something you always read don't you?). It says "we exclude liability for claims regarding the quality or fitness for purpose of goods or otherwise which consumers can make under the Sale of Goods Act 1997".

My mission is now to make as many people aware of the deplorable treatment of PCWB customers. Never ever buy anything as a business customer. Avoid PCWB and dare I say PCW and anything belonging to DSG.

Needless to say Acer will be off my list and by the number of comments below, it is a wonder that they ever manage to sell anything. About to notify Watchdog so if we all start doing the same perhaps they might run a campaign.

Dennis Perry, Bath, February 2010
I too have had mine less than six months and watched my screen actively crack while moving it over from lap to nightstand....so frustrating. Sent to acer for 30 shipping and want to charge 200 to replace the faulty screen:(

Heather, February 2010
Same thing happened to mine, i had it about 2 months, went to open the screen yesterday and i had a small black blob near where the webcam is, then it leaked all the way down to the bottom of the screen after opening lid and closing it. Has anyone managed to get theirs fixed yet? Acer have told me that its not a fault with the laptop that i must of damaged it. Would it work if we sent our pictures of the laptops as evidence to Acer? I just feel that they should be sorting this not us.

Rob, February 2010
This has just happened to my daughter's new Acer 5738 bought in early December for £399 from Currys. She didn't drop it, simply carried it upstairs and put it on her desk at university. I feel the definition of a laptop is that it is a portable appliance which should be able to withstand being put down on a desk. Currys have looked at it and will not repair it under guarantee - they say it is accidental damage regardless of how it was done (ie in this case, putting it down). It's going to cost £130 to be repaired - ridiculous when her laptop is only 2 months old and still under guarantee. Next time we'll go back to Dell.

I fully intend to fight this all the way with both Currys and Acer and would like to hear if any of you have got anywhere.

Mandy, February 2010
I bought an acer for my sons in December 09. It was never dropped screen has cracked less than thirty days from time of first use.i sent the laptop back to acer, they told me 199 plus tax to have it repaired..what do I do now.

Tammie H, January 2010
I have a two year old ACER Aspire 3610 and both corners are cracked. The right hand corner is so bad that the ribbon cable is exposed. This laptop was hardly used as we keep it in our winter home in Florida and it's only used about 3 months per year. i conacted ACER and have yet to receive a reply. Can anybody spell Class Action Lawsuit?

Buckeye Joe, January 2010
Hi everyone! Sorry to hear about your screens! I have a Acer Aspire 5610 my screen never cracked but my kids did something to cause lines in it! I found screens for all acer models at http://www.screenaid.com/
they are all 99.00 USD. Which is way better than 300 to 600. If you cant install yourself you can always buy and have a local repair shop replace it for you! I hope this is helpfull to everyone!

Adam USA, January 2010
Yep, same here!!

goby, January 2010
same thing here, cracked on right hand side after opening it like i would always carefully open a screen. i smell a class-action suit?

that one kid, December 2009
That happened to my acer screen too. I didn't do anything, a big gash just made its way across the screen. Very depressing

Chang Yang, December 2009
It happened to me as well I only had it saince July 2009 and just recently one day I opened it and the screen was cracked. I trully believe its a deffect on Acers laptopts. Acer should do a recall and replace our laptops but how to go about that its the question. Any suggestions?

Brenda, December 2009
mine cracked within 4 hours of opening the box...very disappointing...I took it back to Walmart and explained it was a defective component

Mike, December 2009
same thing happened to my acer laptop I had it for six weeks and when I opened it there was black splodges across the screen and it was cracked. Has anyone had any response from Acer or any of the complaints you have made - what should I do?

Claire, November 2009
me to used it the day before, went to use the nite after Black sploges on the screen then lines how is this right i have only had it since 26th august 09 nobody had touched it.????? is it worth ringing acer or BBC's watchdog?????

Mandy..Arlesey Beds, November 2009
Same thing here. I have a 3 year old Acer Travelmate 2420 which cracked around the right hinge about half a year ago. Combine this with sporadically disconnecting wireless (my Samsung's wireless stays up just fine) and a fan which has become noisy 1 year after purchase. You get what you pay for.

Christian, November 2009
My acer is 3 months old and exactly the same thing happened. I closed it at night, left it on my desk and in the morning it was cracked when i opened it. And I had insurance for the first 2 months as well!

Vicky Hammond, October 2009
Hi we have just had the same problem. Acer have said that we have damaged it, but this is not true as it just cracked on its own. They have refused to repair it unless we pay another £91.71.
Has anybody else had this problem with the screens?

alastair, August 2009
the lid cracked around the left hinge on my 1.5 year old acer laptop. acer customer service says the laptop is not under warranty any more so "i can get lost". well, it looks like acer makes bad quality laptops and offer smililarly bad quality customer service.

nigel, July 2009
just happened to us. I am told this is because of an fault that some of their screens have.
However Acer does not want to own up to it and intend to charge us £150.
On a machine 9 months old and under warranty costing 399 I'm not impressed.
I'm sending them a strong email threatening legal redress but it might be impossible to prove the machine is inheritantly faulty

steve, July 2009
crack appeared for no reason on 2 month old acer notebook. Googled to see what I might do. Not encouraged by what I read here!

julie, June 2009
Like everyone else, I kept the laptop in great condition and one day a big crack appeared on the screen. I contacted Acer, like everyone else to get the same generic reply. I have now filed a Better Business Bureau complaint against Acer and would encourage others to do so.

Jake Z, June 2009
The LCD screen on my three-week old Acer cracked just last week just from shutting it! I was shutting the lid, as I normally do, and the screen broke. This is the SECOND Acer I have had where the screen has broken. I sent it to Acer because I consider shutting the computer to be normal operation (as per the terms of their warranty agreement) but received an email today that it would not be covered. I find this crazy as I think the part must have been defective.

I miss my Dell! My old Dell actually fell off a table, onto a memory stick in the PCMCIA port, and survived completely intact. I guess you get what you pay for with Acer. I have learned. NO MORE ACERS!

J, March 2009
hi bob i fix acer screens for a living. sometimes screens can get damaged without you being aware of it. i can easily fix it for you and i am based in northampton. i charge £130 inc VAT for full replacement screen. If this tickles your fancy give me a call on 07858518540. MJS Computering

matt, February 2009
my laptops screen just cracked yesterday, ive had it since april 08 and now nearly a year later its craked , closed it last night and this morning opend it and theres a crack with the liquid seeping through. Has anyone had any luck with Acer?? email me on mistry_rikki@googlemail.com

theres no point paying 300 pounds for a new screen i could buy a new laptop for that price.

cheers

rix

rix, February 2009
Not a cracked screen but a cracked lid. The laptop was out of warranty, but I got it repaired at no cost to myself. How? I contacted consumer direct http://www.consumerdirect.gov.uk/ and followed their instructions for how to pursue this under the consumers' rights act section 35, 1974. In short, if you buy something, regardless of guarentee period, it should last and work for a reasonable time if used in a reasonable way. So there is no evidence of dropping/bashing etc. and the item is relatively new - 2 to 3 years for a laptop is still relatively new! you should have a case. You must take up this issue with the reseller though, not the manufacturer. The reseller may well say they can't help and point you in the direction of the manufacturer, but don't be fobbed off. If you follow the right procedures and make it clear you know your statutory rights, they are bound by law. The thinking is they are bound to ensure what they sell is adequate for the purposes they sell it for - so if the item doesn't last that long, it's their responsibility. I suspect a cracked screen might be due to the same sub-standard design as seems to cause the lid to crack near the hinges - i.e. the lid cannot take the full stress of opening and closing, and so distorts slightly - I guess that could crack a screen. Anyway - the way forward is to simply argue it wasn't fit for purpose. Good luck.

mark, December 2008
Same Story, different model of Acer. I caused absolutely no damage to it. I closed it in the evening and the next morning it was cracked. I think I will make a complaint with the BBB in the next week.

Baron, November 2008
same thing happened to my daughter's Acer a few weeks after we purchased it from BB. They don't want to know about it --we've written to ACER and we're waiting for a reply. Acer quoted us $449 to fix it (phone quote). My daugher says she closed it and when it was opened next day screen was cracked. Has anyone contacted Better business bureau and did you get any satisfaction?

Tink, October 2008
Same happend to me. Opened the laptop one morning, used it and then closed the lid. 5mins later opened the lid again to find a big nasty crack right down the middle with all the LCD seeping through.
Retailer insists that i caused the crack by shutting the lid onto a foreign object and therefor would not provide a replacement even though i had had it only a week. £699 down the drain

Popeye, October 2008
Hi I bought my son an acer laptop As5920-5A2G model on 6th of june 2008 his screen cracked on its own when he closed it .How many more people out there have got the same problem Im wondering it its a design fault ????? please add if your laptop has the same problem Bye Isobell

Isobell donaldson, August 2008
same thing happened with mine even tho its under warranty acer wont replace it unless i pay 649,. only thing to do is buy replacement screen from screentek and do it yourself or pay to have it done, will be saving about 300. this way
