How to recode alarm when changing battery?

I have a 1998 Rover 220 TDi, the remote fob is very erratic in its operation. I guess it needs a new battery but have been told that it will need recoding if the battery is removed. Could you tell me how the recoding is carried out please.

If it is a two button plip (fob). (Which is should be for that YoM.) The car/plip you not need recoding when you replace the battery. (If it is a one button plip it may need it but not usually.)

Only if the following procedure fails should they car and plip need resetting and it needs to be done by a dealer with a diagnostic laptop.

Get a CR2032 battery. Remove the old battery. Press and hold each button in turn for five seconds. Fit the new battery. Unlock the vehicle using the key and then operate the lock button at least four times. It is now ready for use.
