why is my hotpoint dryer leaving brown stains on the drying?

My Hotpoint tumble dryer is leaving brown stains on our clothes which will not wash off. Why?

My guess is that the marks are rust. Is the drum damaged? Or it may be that a metal item (e.g. a nail or screw)is magnetised and sticking to the drum.
