How can I stop my briggs & stratton lawn mower engine from surging?

My lawn mower with a briggs & stratton engine starts well, but doesn't seem to have enough power at top end and engine surges constantly. Checked the obvious faults, e.g. air filter blocked, water in the fuel tank, even replace spark plug. Any ideas?

Not knowing the age of your mower, try checking the governor linkage. Cowling could be full of grass.

If it's a Classic, Quattro or Sprint engine model then it is the carb diaphragm that needs replacing.
