How can I fix my 1989 Nissan Pickup?

It idles extremely fast, and will "load up" when I down shift, and then die when I stop. I have to take the fuel pump fuse out, start the truck and let it die. Then put the fuse back in and it will run for a while. There is a lot of black smoke and the smell of "rich" gas when it starts.

Sounds like the fuel pressure regulator is bad letting fuel flow on its own....check vacum line going to thr regulator for fuel in it ....if you have a vacum pump with gauge hook it up to regulator and see if it holds pressure ...if it doesn`t it is bad
