engine on my sons ford ka?

i resently purchased a ford ka for my son to learn to drive in ( 1999 model )
everything was fine until resently, and now whenever he is driving along, and he dips the clutch to either start breaking or change gear the engine starts to rev up on its own and then dies down.

any ideas as to rectifying this problem please
thank you in advance

could be clutch pedal wiych is locate on bracket above the pedal remove it and check for continuity acros it, or could be idle spped control valve but only if the engine hunt just at idle. hope this is a help

Hi Mark, it will be the idle control valve sticking as they get gummed up with petrol deposits, easy to fix, two bolts and an electrical connector then clean with spray carb cleaner, don't use anything else like wd40 as the oil will cause the valve to stick even worse
