over revving?

i been told my ecu has gone the car is revving at 5000 rpm i dont understand why cause i came home other night and it was ok till the next morning can anyone help ty

Is the engine management light on?
Is the throttle operated by cable or is it 'fly-by-wire'?
Check the inlet hose (goes from the air filter to the throttle) for leaks or splits.
Remove the inlet hose from the top of the throttle body and make sure the butterfly valve is fully closed.

If yours looks partially open like that you may have a sticky throttle cable or linkage.

It,s unlikely the ecu has totaly failed as It wouldn't start, more likely one or more of the sensors/valves has failed!! Make, Model & year would help with a better diagnosis, but eventually you will have to get it connected to a diagnostic code reader to find the fault, most good independant garages and tyre & exhaust places have the required kit
