Hayter Harrier engine replacement is it possible?

I have a 25-30 year old hayter harrier 19 inch cut mower. The engine is a 4 hp briggs & stratton which is wrecked and is no longer available. Is there a Briggs and stratton engine that will replace it.?????

Agreed - just measured several - although some DO have a hole for a roll pin and some don't. There is a Tecumseh BVL198 engine on ebay at the moment that will fit (item No 370083719815). This one's electric start.

....any of the later Quantum or intek side PTO Hayter spec engines will fit. The PTO shaft on the Briggs engine doesn't vary on these machines- the variation on length comes from the Hayter coupling tube which do vary but are easily obtained from any Hayter outlet.

Depends how handy with the spanners you are! You can swap the entire sump pan and camshaft (which carries the PTO drive) from your existing engine onto a good 'donor' non-PTO engine of the same basic type. (This will at least ensure that the PTO shaft is the right length, as they varied depending upon the application).

Fitting a newer engine is pretty much impossible if you want to retain the power drive feature.

Any of the later Harrier 48 engines will fit as long as the engine has a PTO shaft for the rear roller drive belt- after 2004 Hayter done away with PTO engines and now drive the rear roller directly of a pulley on the crankshaft together with the blade.

Stick to the Quantum or Intek series of engines. Remember to check whether you engine is a primer choke or lever operated choke before you buy a replacement. The new engine will more than likely be a braked engine if you are fitting a later version (for the OPC lever) which will need disabling once fitted to your machine.
