how to start my 1994 mk3 golf gti 16v?

when i go to start my car, it starts the revs go up to 1000rpm then the engine dies.
this happens when the engine is both hot and cold

you really need to get it code read otherwise you'r p*****g in the dark.at this age,a cheap code reader would be less then £20.there are only so many codes outputed by this model /age .. many of them would be helpfull.further,when it dies,do you lose sparks.?
