Trailer brakes?

How much backward movement of the towing hitch should be allowed before the brakes begin to apply?
The hitch is a modern hydraulic type and the brakes are operated by rod and cable.

trial and error. when i apply my brakes .you can hardly
tell you are towing any thing .
as on most trailer towing bars ,im sure yours can be adjusted to obtain this

The answer is not that easy, because of the auto reverse fitted to the trailer. This allows you to reverse without the brakes applying. However there is only an inch or 2 of movement before the brakes should operate.
