could be the wheel bearing,get it looked at asap. or i had a banging sound on my punto a little while ago and the nut's wernt done up properly.

sounds like a worn wheel bearing should be replaced as a matter of urgency.
A quick test is jack the car up and move the wheel from side to side with your hands, if it has play the bearing needs replaced.
