my offside rear wheel has lots of play and it squeaks and bangs. What is the cause and is it safe to drive

could be the wheel bearing,get it looked at asap. or i had a banging sound on my punto a little while ago and the nut's wernt done up properly.

sounds like a worn wheel bearing should be replaced as a matter of urgency.
A quick test is jack the car up and move the wheel from side to side with your hands, if it has play the bearing needs replaced.
