I can't seem to budge the nut from either of my 38'' mower blades. Does the nut loosen in the reverse direction (ie. clockwise)?

No - they're just TIGHT. I use an mpact wrench with a 6 point socket.

I don't even bother trying with standard hand tools - if you damage the bolt, it will be even harder to remove.

12V inpact wrenches can had for next to nothing on ebay. Quality isn't great, but they do the job.
