Replacing Batteries for BT Freestyle 2200?

I have BT Freestyle 2200 cordless telephone (twin).I have had them for a while.The phones now need constant charging. Apparently you can get replacement batteries for this model but how do you get the old batteries out? Does the back slide off? Is there a certain way of doing this.Push,pull,slide or just take a hammer to it and buy new. Many thanks

To slide the battery cover off: hold the handset in your left hand with the keypad facing the palm of your hand. You should see "BT" written on the back. Make sure this is UPSIDE DOWN. You will see an oval shape with three friction dots at the top, these are on the battery cover. Put the thumb of your right hand on the friction dots and push down and forward quite hard.

the battery cover should just slide downwards. BT doesn't support this model anymore but I have found the user guide here:
